Fiber optics with FRITZ!Box

Through the internet at the speed of light

Fast, stable, and future-proof: Fiber optics use pulses of light to stably transport data over kilometers without any loss of speed. Fiber optic networks are also indifferent to electrical and magnetic interference and offer symmetrical gigabit downstream and upstream speeds.

How fast is fiber optics?

The speed that can be achieved with a fiber optics connection depends on the technology used by the fiber optic provider. In Germany, AON or GPON connections are offered with speeds of 1 Gigabit/s, occasionally also XGS-PON connections with higher speeds. Due to the high expansion potential of fiber-optic networks that theoretically also allow terabit speeds, we can expect significantly faster connections in the future.

  • AON: 1 Gbit/s (downstream and upstream)
  • GPON: 2.5 Gbit/s (downstream) and 1.25 Gbit/s (upstream)
  • XGS-PON: 10 Gbit/s (downstream and upstream)

Your provider can tell you which fiber optic technology is used at your location. You can find detailed information on fiber optic technologies in our guide.

How is the FRITZ!Box set up for use with a fiber optic connection?

There are two ways to connect a FRITZ!Box to a fiber optic connection:

Direct connection to fiber optic network

FRITZ!Box models with integrated fiber optic modems can be used directly on the fiber optic connection to save space and power:

FRITZ!Box connected to a fiber optic modem (ONT)

If you cannot connect the FRITZ!Box directly, you can connect FRITZ!Box models to an available fiber optic modem (ONT) with a network cable:

Which FRITZ!Box for which fiber optic connection?

FRITZ!Box models with an integrated fiber optic modem can be used on all AON and GPON connections with speeds of up to 2.5 gigabit/s. Individual fiber optic providers also offer FRITZ!Box models for XGS-PON connections with higher speeds.

FRITZ!Box models with WAN ports can be used with any fiber optic modem (ONT). Make sure that the FRITZ!Box's WAN port is at least as fast as your fiber optic connection. Otherwise, the speed of the internet connection will be limited to the speed of the WAN port.

Our product comparison can help you choose the FRITZ!Box that's right for you.
