Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a fiber optic connection

You want to set up the FRITZ!Box on a fiber optic connection? ✔ It's easy with this guide.

To establish an internet connection via your fiber optic connection (Fiber to the Home, FTTH), connect the FRITZ!Box to the fiber optic connection and enter your account information in the FRITZ!Box user interface.

Refer to Setting up the FRITZ!Box: Guides for different providers for links to our provider-specific guides. If your internet service provider is not listed there, proceed as described in this guide.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Unlocking your FRITZ!Box

If you purchased your FRITZ!Box from a retailer, your internet service provider may have to unlock it first:

  1. Call the customer service of your internet service provider and have them unlock the FRITZ!Box for your fiber optic connection, if necessary. Depending on the provider, you can either call their customer service or use an activation portal to activate it.
    • With some providers, the FRITZ!Box's "Modem-ID" is required to unlock it. You can find this information on the bottom of the device:

2 Inserting the SFP module into the FRITZ!Box

The FRITZ!Box is available in several different product variants, each of which is delivered with different components. If there was no SFP module inserted in your FRITZ!Box, perform the following steps:

  1. Insert the SFP module that is suitable for your fiber optic connection into the SFP slot of the FRITZ!Box:
    1. If you have an active fiber optic connection (AON), insert the SFP module "FRITZ!SFP AON" into the SFP slot of the FRITZ!Box.
    2. If you have a passive fiber optic connection (GPON), insert the SFP module "FRITZ!SFP GPON" into the SFP slot of the FRITZ!Box.
    3. If you have a passive fiber optic connection according to XGS-PON, insert the SFP module "FRITZ!SFP XGS-PON" into the SFP slot of the FRITZ!Box.

Fig.: Inserting the SFP module into the FRITZ!Box

Important:If you do not know what kind of fiber optic connection you have, test both of the SFP modules supplied with the FRITZ!Box. The Power/Fiber LED on the FRITZ!Box remains lit as soon as the correct SFP module was used to connect the FRITZ!Box to the fiber optic connection.

3 Connecting the FRITZ!Box to your fiber optic connection

  1. Remove the dust protection caps from the fiber optic cable, the SFP module in the FRITZ!Box, and from the optical telecommunications outlet.
  2. Connect the fiber optic cable to the SFP module in the FRITZ!Box and to the optical telecommunications outlet. Do not bend the fiber optic cable and do not hold the ends of the cable in front of your eyes.

Important:If a network termination that is supplied with power and converts optical signals to Ethernet (LAN) was installed instead of an optical telecommunications outlet, have your internet service provider install a passive optical telecommunications outlet.
