Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a fiber optic connection

You want to set up the FRITZ!Box on a fiber optic connection? ✔ It's easy with this guide.

To establish an internet connection via your fiber optic connection (Fiber to the Home, FTTH), connect the FRITZ!Box to the fiber optic connection and enter your account information in the FRITZ!Box user interface.

If your line is from the Deutsche Telekom, use the guide Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a fiber optic connection from Telekom

If you are using your FRITZ!Box with a connection from a different internet service provider, proceed as described in this guide.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The fiber optic connection must comply with the standard ITU-T G.984 (GPON). Use with an active fiber optic network (ITU-T G.652, AON) is not supported.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Unlocking your FRITZ!Box

If you purchased your FRITZ!Box from a retailer, your internet service provider may have to unlock it first:

  1. Contact the customer service of your internet service provider and have them unlock the FRITZ!Box for your fiber optic connection, if necessary. Depending on the provider, you can either call their customer service or use an activation portal to activate it.
    • With some providers, the FRITZ!Box's "GPON Serial" on the bottom of the device is required to unlock it.

2 Connecting the FRITZ!Box to your fiber optic connection

  1. Connect the fiber optic cable to the "Fiber" socket on the FRITZ!Box and the fiber optic socket. Do not bend the fiber optic cable and do not hold the ends of the cable in front of your eyes.

Important:If a network termination that is supplied with power and converts optical signals to Ethernet (LAN) was installed instead of a fiber termination unit, have your internet service provider install a passive socket.

Note:The FRITZ!Box has an SC/APC connector (wide connector, polished at an 8-degree angle). Depending on the socket, you may need to use a fiber optic cable with an adapter. The fiber optic cable is not included with your FRITZ!Box, it is supplied by your internet service provider.

3 Configuring the internet connection in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Enter the FRITZ!Box password on the bottom of the device and click "Log In".
  3. If the menu "Account Information" is not displayed automatically, click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  4. Select your internet service provider in the drop-down list. If your internet service provider is not displayed, select "other internet service provider" from the drop-down list.
  5. If account information is required, enter the account information you received from your internet service provider in the corresponding fields.
    • If account information is not required, enable the option "No" in the "Account Information" section.
  6. If your internet service provider requires the use of a particular ONT installation ID, enable the option "ONT Installation ID needed" and enter it in the corresponding field.
  7. If you selected "Other internet service provider" and your internet service provider requires you to use a particular VLAN ID:
    1. Click "Change connection settings".
    2. Enable the option "Use VLAN for internet access".
    3. Enter the VLAN ID and PBit in the corresponding fields.
  8. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Now the FRITZ!Box uses the account information you entered to establish the internet connection. Then you can configure your telephone numbers in the FRITZ!Box and connect your wireless devices with the FRITZ!Box.
