FRITZ!NAS displays macOS management files (e.g. .DS_Store)

macOS management files are displayed in FRITZ!NAS (http://fritz.nas). Such files include .DS_Store files and files with names that begin with "._". These files are not displayed when you use the Finder to access the storage.

Cause

  • Apple macOS automatically creates a management file for every file that contains information necessary to display the file in the Finder (for example position and size of window). In addition, a .DS_Store file is created in every folder. By default, the macOS Finder does not display these management files. However, Windows and Linux computers as well as NAS systems such as the FRITZ!Box display these management files.

Disabling macOS management files for network drives

Disable the creation of management files for external and network drives on the computer with macOS.

  1. Open the Finder.
  2. Click "Applications" and then "Utilities".
  3. Open Terminal.
  4. Enter the command defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true in the Terminal.
  5. Press Enter.
  6. Restart your computer.

Now the computer no longer creates new management files for external and network drives. Existing management files are still displayed and must be manually deleted if necessary.
