VPN key is not generated when setting up a VPN connection

When you set up a VPN connection for a FRITZ!Box user, no VPN key is generated. The fields "Shared secret" and "IPSec pre-shared key" in the "VPN Settings" window of the FRITZ!Box user interface are empty. As a result, you cannot set up a VPN connection for macOS or mobile devices (iPhone, Android smartphone).

Cause

  • The FRITZ!Box does not have any available IP addresses that can be reserved for the VPN connection.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Adjusting the FRITZ!Box's DHCP range

Configure the FRITZ!Box's DHCP server so that there are enough IP addresses available for VPN connections in the IP address range from which it assigns IP addresses. To do so, limit the range from which the FRITZ!Box's DHCP server assigns IP addresses (for example from .20 to .200):

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
  4. Click the "IPv4 Addresses" button. If the button is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  5. Enable the DHCP server and define the range from which the FRITZ!Box assigns IP addresses.

Note:The FRITZ!Box has the IP address 192.168.178.1 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) and assigns IP addresses from xxx.20 to xxx.200 in the factory settings.

  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

2 Reconfiguring the VPN connection in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "FRITZ!Box Users" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click the (Edit) button for the user who intends to connect to the FRITZ!Box via VPN.
  4. Disable the option "VPN".
  5. Click "OK" to save the settings.
  6. Enable the option "VPN".
  7. Click "OK" to save the settings.
  8. Set up the VPN connection on the network device.
