Setting up the FRITZ!Box to conduct calls over another FRITZ!Box

If you have two FRITZ!Boxes, you can configure them so that the numbers configured in the FRITZ!Box (router) connected to your line are also available to the second FRITZ!Box (IP client). This way you can also use the second FRITZ!Box to conduct calls, even if it does not have access to the internet.

Important:The instructions for configuring the FRITZ!Box (router) are valid for the FRITZ!Box model given above these instructions. For the instructions on configuring the FRITZ!Box (IP client), we used a FRITZ!Box with FRITZ!OS 6.30 or later as an example. You can find the version of FRITZ!OS on the "Overview" page of the FRITZ!Box user interface.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box (router) is connected to the IP client.
  • No telephone numbers are configured in the IP client.
  • Various functions cannot be used with the IP client. This is the case with busy on busy and call-back on busy / no response, for example. In addition, neither faxing nor data connections are reliable.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Deleting dialing rules in the IP client

  1. Click "Telephony" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  2. Click "Call Handling" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click on the "Dialing Rules" tab.
  4. Delete all of the dialing rules that can be deleted.
  5. If a dialing rule cannot be deleted, call up its settings and select the option "Internet automatically" for "Connect via".

Important:Only configure new dialing rules in the FRITZ!Box (router)!

Example configuration

In the following example, the telephone connected to the FRITZ!Box (IP client) uses the telephone number 3333 to make calls and reacts to incoming calls to the numbers 3333 and 4444:

IP telephone in the FRITZ!Box (router)Telephone number in the FRITZ!Box (IP client)Telephone connected to the FRITZ!Box (IP client)
Internal number: 620
User name: username1
Password: secret
Number for outgoing calls: 3333
Numbers for incoming calls: 4444
Telephone number for registration: 620
Internal telephone number in the FRITZ!Box: 620
User name: username1
Password: secret
Registrar: IP address of the FRITZ!Box (router)
Number for outgoing calls: 620
Number for incoming calls: all

If you want to assign different numbers to different telephones connected to the FRITZ!Box (IP client), register the FRITZ!Box (IP client) as an IP telephone with the FRITZ!Box (router) several times. You could then configure another telephone connected to the FRITZ!Box (IP client) so that the telephone uses the number 5555 to make calls and reacts to all incoming calls, for example:

IP telephone in the FRITZ!Box (router)Telephone number in the FRITZ!Box (IP client)Telephone connected to the FRITZ!Box (IP client)
Internal number: 621
User name: username2
Password: secret
Number for outgoing calls: 5555
Numbers for incoming calls: all
Telephone number for registration: 621
Internal telephone number in the FRITZ!Box: 621
User name: username2
Password: secret
Registrar: IP address of the FRITZ!Box (router)
Number for outgoing calls: 621
Number for incoming calls: all
Table: Example for an additional telephone connected to the FRITZ!Box (IP client)

3 Using a telephone book with the IP client

With the FRITZ!Box (IP client) you can use quick-dial or the vanity code (string of letters) to call a number saved in the telephone book of the FRITZ!Box (router):

  1. Either: Enter *#**7[quick-dial]#.
    • Or: Enter *#**8[vanity code]#.

4 Functions supported by the IP client

You can make internal calls with the FRITZ!Box (IP client) and use the CLIP (forwarding caller IDs) and CLIR (withholding own caller ID) functions. We cannot guarantee that other functions can be used.
