Matter with FRITZ!

The new Matter integration now makes your FRITZ! Smart Home compatible with numerous devices, control centers, and apps from other manufacturers.

With Matter, you will be able to control your smart home devices centrally and regardless of the manufacturer – whether by means of automation rules, manually in only an app, or conveniently through your preferred voice control.

What is Matter?

Matter is an open connectivity standard for the uniform networking and control of smart home devices. The most important properties of Matter are:

  • Cross-manufacturer compatibility
Matter allows smart home devices from different manufacturers to communicate with each other and be centrally controlled and managed.
  • Simple setup
New smart home devices can be installed quickly and easily by scanning a QR code or using the 11-digit registration code.
  • High level of security
Communication between all devices in the Matter network is encrypted and protected from interception.
  • Local control
The devices communicate directly over the home network – without a detour over the internet. This way internet access or a manufacturer's own cloud services is not required to use the smart home. However, an internet connection is required for voice control of smart home devices.

Roles within the Matter network

Roles in the Matter network (Fabric)

A Matter network (fabric) consists of two or more devices in an IP network (for example a FRITZ!Box home network) that fulfill different roles:

  • Matter controller
Matter controllers are hubs for all of the smart home devices in the Matter network. Controllers are often integrated in a smart speaker (for example Amazon Echo Dot) and also allow voice control of the devices.

Note:An internet connection is required for voice control of smart home devices.

The Matter controller determines which platform and app (for example Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home) is used to control and manage the Matter network.
  • Smart home devices
Matter-compatible smart home devices connect directly to the Matter network via Wi-Fi or Thread.
Smart home devices that do not support Wi-Fi standards that are compatible with Matter can be integrated into the Matter network via a bridge.
  • Matter bridge
Matter bridges integrate smart home devices into the Matter network whose radio standards (for example DECT-ULE, HAN-FUN, Zigbee) do not support IP connections.

Matter with FRITZ! Smart Home

Matter with FRITZ! Smart Home

In the FRITZ! Smart Home, the FRITZ!Smart Gateway serves as the Matter bridge. Whether you have FRITZ!DECT, HAN-FUN or Zigbee devices, whether they are registered directly on the FRITZ!Smart Gateway or on your FRITZ!Box – FRITZ!Smart Gateway seamlessly and completely integrates the FRITZ! Smart Home into an existing Matter network.

Use Matter-compatible motion sensors to switch your FRITZ!DECT smart plugs. Or control your FRITZ!DECT radiator controls by voice with Alexa, Siri or Hey Google. With Matter, the possibilities are almost limitless.

And since Matter is simply an additional "language" for your FRITZ! Smart Home, of course you can still control your smart home devices via FRITZ! automations or FRITZ!App Smart Home.
