Android reports that a VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box is not secure

Android reports that a VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box is not secure. One of the following messages is displayed on the smartphone or tablet, depending on the Android version used:

  • "This VPN is not secure. Update to an IKEv2-VPN"
  • "Connected, not secure"
  • "Connected / VPN not secure"

Android labels IKEv1 or PSK as not secure

Some Android versions label IPSec VPN connections to the FRITZ!Box as not secure if they use the IKEv1 protocol or the IKEv2 protocol with pre-shared keys (PSK).

However, VPN connections to the FRITZ!Box are still safe. If you are concerned about the message, you have two options:

  1. If you selected "IPSec Xauth PSK" when setting up the VPN connection in Android, delete the VPN connection and set it up as described in our guide Setting up an IPSec VPN to the FRITZ!Box in Android and select "IKEv2/IPSec PSK".
  2. If you selected "IKEv2/IPSec PSK" when setting up the VPN connection in Android, delete the VPN connection and set up the connection with WireGuard.
