FRITZ!Box reports a key conflict when importing a WireGuard configuration file
When you try to import the settings file for a WireGuard connection, the FRITZ!Box displays the following error message:
"Unfortunately, it was not possible to apply your settings.
Imported configuration file of WireGuard remote site triggered a key conflict with existing connections. Click on 'Close' to go to the WireGuard overview and set up the WireGuard connection again".
Cannot import due to existing WireGuard connections
The FRITZ!Box refuses to import the settings file because it contains a new private key. However, the FRITZ!Box already uses a private key for the WireGuard connections that were already configured. The new key would overwrite the old one and the existing WireGuard connections would no longer work then.
Generating a new settings file with the FRITZ!Box's key
- If you want to set up a connection to a different FRITZ!Box, reconfigure the connection. Proceed as described in the corresponding guide:
- If you want to configure a connection to a different router or a VPN provider:
- Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click on "Permit Access" in the "Internet" menu.
- Click on the "VPN (WireGuard)" tab.
- Click the "Display WireGuard Settings" button.
- If you are asked to do so, on the FRITZ!Box confirm that the procedure may be executed and click "OK" to complete the procedure.
- Make a note of the FRITZ!Box's private key.
- Reconfigure the WireGuard connection in the other router or with the VPN provider using the FRITZ!Box's private key.
- Repeat the import with the newly created settings file.
Wichtig:If you cannot generate a settings file with the FRITZ!Box's private key, delete all of the WireGuard connections configured in the FRITZ!Box before you import the available settings file. Then you can configure the other WireGuard connections again.
