Error message "Could not find the AVM VPN driver"
The FRITZ!VPN software does not start on a computer with Windows 8 / 7. One of the following error messages is displayed:
- "Could not find the AVM VPN driver. No connections can be established. Read the Help for information about how to remedy this problem."
- "Could not find the AVM VPN driver. Read the Help for information about how to install the AVM VPN driver manually. Cause: Illegal function".
Cause
- The AVM VPN driver was not correctly installed when installing FRITZ!VPN.
1 Manually uninstalling the AVM VPN driver
- Open the overview of network connections:
- Windows 8
- Press the keyboard shortcut Windows key + X and select "Control Panel" from the context menu.
- Select "Category" from the drop-down list "View by:" on the top right ().
- Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center".
- Click "Change adapter settings".
- Click the arrow next to the (Change view) button in the menu bar and select "Details".
- Windows 7
- In Windows, click "Start" and then "Control Panel".
- Select "Category" from the drop-down list "View by:" on the top right ().
- Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center".
- Click "Change adapter settings".
- Click the arrow next to the "Change view" button in the menu bar and select "Details".
- Windows 8
- Right-click the connection for the network adapter used to establish the internet connection.
- Click "Properties" and then "Continue" ("Continue" is not always available).
- If the entry "AVM VPN Driver" is displayed:
- Mark the entry "AVM VPN Driver" and click "Uninstall".
- Click "Yes" and "OK" to confirm that you want to uninstall.
- Restart your computer.
2 Manually installing the AVM VPN driver
- Open the overview of network connections:
- Windows 8
- Press the keyboard shortcut Windows key + X and select "Control Panel" from the context menu.
- Select "Category" from the drop-down list "View by:" on the top right ().
- Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center".
- Click "Change adapter settings".
- Click the arrow next to the (Change view) button in the menu bar and select "Details".
- Windows 7
- In Windows, click "Start" and then "Control Panel".
- Select "Category" from the drop-down list "View by:" on the top right ().
- Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center".
- Click "Change adapter settings".
- Click the arrow next to the "Change view" button in the menu bar and select "Details".
- Windows 8
- Right-click the connection for the network adapter used to establish the internet connection.
- Click "Properties" and then "Continue" ("Continue" is not always available).
- Click "Install" and then "Service and "Add".
- Click "Have Disk" and then "Browse".
- Select the path to FRITZ!VPN (for example "C:\Programs\FRITZ!VPN").
- Select the file "avmnwim.inf", then click "Open" and "OK".
- Under "Network service", select "AVM VPN Driver" and click "OK"
- If the message "AVM VPN Miniport software did not pass the Windows logo test" is displayed, click "Continue".
- Restart your computer.
