FRITZ!Box USB remote connection reports "Could not establish the connection to the device"

Although the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software displays the USB devices connected to the FRITZ!Box, they cannot be connected to the computer via the USB remote connection. The USB remote connection displays the following error message:

"Could not establish the connection to the device. If the connection still cannot be established, check the firewall settings to make sure that the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection is registered and enabled as an exception."

Cause

  • A firewall is interfering with the communication between the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection and the FRITZ!Box, the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection is not correctly configured, or it is not properly installed.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Setting up the USB remote connection in FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "USB / Storage" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "USB Remote Connection" tab.
  4. Enable the USB remote connection.
  5. Select the devices type for which the USB remote connection should be enabled, for example "USB storage media".
  6. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

2 Configuring the firewall

  1. Either: Configure an exception for the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software in the firewall.
    • Or: Configure the firewall to allow incoming and outgoing TCP and UDP connections from port 2066 on the FRITZ!Box to any destination ports on the computer.

      Note:Refer to the manufacturer of the firewall for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.

3 Uninstalling the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software

  1. Click (Start) and then (Settings) in the Windows task bar.
  2. Click "Apps" in the "Settings" menu.
  3. Click on the entry "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection" and then "Uninstall" in the section "Apps & features".
  4. Confirm your choice and click "Yes" in the window "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?".
  5. Click "Remove the application from this computer" in the window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" and then click "OK".

4 Using the Device Manager to uninstall the audio bridge

  1. Press the keyboard shortcut Windows key + Pause key.
    • The window with basic information about your computer opens.
  2. Click "Device Manager".
  3. If there is an entry "AVM Audio Bridge" or "AVM USB remote connection":
    1. Right-click all of the entries under "AVM Audio Bridge" or "AVM USB remote connection" and select "Uninstall".
    2. Click "OK" and follow the instructions.
    3. Restart your computer.
    • If there is no entry "AVM Audio Bridge" or "AVM USB remote connection", continue with the next section.

5 Installing the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software

  1. Log on to the computer as the Windows user who wants to use the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection.

    Important:If the user does not have administrator rights, you must enter a valid administrator password when installing or starting the software for the first time.

  2. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  3. Click "Home Network" and then "USB / Storage".
  4. Click on the "USB Remote Connection" tab.
  5. Click on "Download".
    • The window "USB Remote Connection" opens.
  6. If the window "USB Remote Connection" has a "Download" button:
    1. Click "Download" in the window "USB Remote Connection" and download the file "fritzbox-usb-fernanschluss.application".
    2. Double-click the downloaded file.
  7. Click "Install" and follow the instructions on your screen.
  8. Repeat steps 1 - 7 for all other Windows users who want to use the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection.
