Configuring different DNS servers in the FRITZ!Box

DNS servers translate the names of internet servers to numeric IP addresses (for example avm.de to 212.42.244.122).

By default, the FRITZ!Box uses the internet service provider's DNS server for name resolution. You can also configure other, free DNS servers in the internet in the FRITZ!Box (for example Digitalcourage, Digitale Gesellschaft Schweiz, Quad9).

If you run a local DNS server in the home network (for example Pi-hole, dnsmasq, Windows Server), you can also configure the FRITZ!Box so that it announces your local DNS server to the devices in the home network.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box always uses your internet service provider's DNS servers for internet telephony, push service mails, and several other functions.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Configuring a DNS server for web requests

The following steps are only necessary if the FRITZ!Box should use other DNS servers for name resolution instead of the internet service provider's DNS server:

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on the "DNS Server" tab.
  4. If you want to configure other DNSv4 servers:
    1. Enable the option "Use other DNSv4 servers".
    2. Enter the IP address of the DNSv4 server in the "Preferred DNSv4 server" field.

ATTENTION!If the IP address of the DNS server is entered incorrectly, you will not be able to access the internet over IPv4.

    3. Enter the IP address of a second DNSv4 server in the "Alternative DNSv4 server" field so that websites can be opened even if the preferred DNSv4 server is unavailable.
  5. If you want to configure other DNSv6 servers:
    1. Enable the option "Use other DNSv6 servers".
    2. Enter the IP address of the DNSv6 server in the "Preferred DNSv6 server" field.

ATTENTION!If the IP address of the DNS server is entered incorrectly, you will not be able to access the internet over IPv6.

    3. Enter the IP address of a second DNSv6 server in the "Alternative DNSv6 server" field so that websites can be opened even if the preferred DNSv6 server is unavailable.
  6. If the FRITZ!Box should automatically switch to public DNS servers if a fault occurs, enable the option "Fallback to public DNS servers when DNS disrupted".
  7. If DNS queries should be encrypted:
    1. Enable the option "Encrypted name resolution in the internet (DNS over TLS)".
    2. Enter the resolved name (fully qualified domain name) of the DNS servers that are to be used by the FRITZ!Box in the field "Resolved Names of the DNS Server" (for example dns.google, one.one.one.one).
  8. Click "Apply" to save the settings and on the FRITZ!Box, confirm that the procedure may be executed, if you are asked to do so.
