Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a mobile network
With an additional mobile network dongle, the FRITZ!Box can also establish the internet connection via the mobile network. All you have to do is connect the mobile network dongle to the FRITZ!Box and enter the PIN in the FRITZ!Box user interface, and the complete FRITZ!Box range of functions for internet, telephony, and multimedia is then available to all devices in your home network without restriction.
Requirements / Restrictions
- The mobile network dongle must support the mobile standard 4G (LTE) or 3G (UMTS/HSPA).
- The mobile network dongle must support the AT command set or USB tethering.
- Depending on the mobile network provider, functions for which a public IP address is required (for example incoming VPN connections) are either not available or only available to a limited extent.
Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.
1 Connecting a mobile network dongle to the FRITZ!Box
- With the SIM card inserted, connect the mobile network dongle to a USB port on the FRITZ!Box.
Important:According to the USB specifications, the power consumption of a USB device may not exceed 500 mA. If the dongle requires more than this, use a USB hub with its own power supply (active USB hub) to connect it to the FRITZ!Box. Information on the dongle's power consumption can be obtained from its manufacturer.
2 Configuring the internet connection in the FRITZ!Box
Preparations
- Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Mobile Network" ("Mobile Communications") in the "Internet" menu. If the tab is not displayed, follow the steps in our guide FRITZ!Box does not detect a mobile network dongle.
- If the section "USB Tethering" is displayed, set up internet access via USB tethering.
- If the section "USB Tethering" is not displayed, continue with the next section.
Configuring the FRITZ!Box
- Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Mobile Network" ("Mobile Communications") in the "Internet" menu.
- If the mobile network should always be used for the internet connection, enable the option "Internet connection via mobile networks enabled".
- If the mobile network should only be used for the internet connection when the DSL connection fails, enable the option "Connect to the internet using the mobile communications network only when the DSL connection fails".
Note:Once the DSL connection has been stable and available again for 30 minutes, the FRITZ!Box clears the connection to the mobile network and switches the internet connection back to DSL.
- If the mobile network should only be used for the internet connection when the DSL connection fails, enable the option "Connect to the internet using the mobile communications network only when the DSL connection fails".
- Enter the PIN for the SIM card of the mobile network dongle in the "PIN" field.
Important:If you enter the wrong PIN three times, you must enter the PUK. Your mobile network provider can provide you with information on the PIN or PUK.
- Select your provider from the drop-down list "Mobile network provider". If your provider is not displayed, select "Other operator" and enter the account information you received from your provider in the corresponding fields.
Note:You cannot change the account information for preconfigured mobile network providers.
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
The FRITZ!Box now establishes the internet connection using the mobile network dongle connected to it.
Note:If the mobile network dongle supports "CSV" (Circuit Switched Voice), you can also enter the SIM card's mobile telephone number in the FRITZ!Box and assign it to the telephones connected to it.
