Cannot update FRITZ!OS: Error message after selecting a FRITZ!OS file

The update for the FRITZ!Box cannot be installed. After you select the file in the FRITZ!Box user interface, one of the following error messages is displayed:

  • "The update failed: The specified file does not contain any valid firmware for your device."
  • "The update failed. An unspecified error occurred during the update."

1 Downloading the FRITZ!OS file again

  1. Call up ftp.avm.de/fritzbox/ in your web browser.
  2. Switch to the folder for your FRITZ!Box model, then to the subfolder "deutschland" or "other", and then to the folder "fritz.os".

Note:The complete model name of your FRITZ!Box is shown in the FRITZ!Box user interface on the "Overview" page and is also printed on the sticker on the bottom of the device.

  3. Download the file with the extension ".image" to the computer.

2 Restarting the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Backup" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click on the "Restart" tab.
  4. Click the "Restart" button.

3 Repeating the update process

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Update" in the "System" menu.

Important:If the "Update" menu is not available, your FRITZ!Box was provided by your cable provider. The cable provider automatically installs new FRITZ!OS for these devices. It is therefore not possible or necessary to install an update using the FRITZ!Box user interface. Information on the new FRITZ!OS version and possible dates can be obtained from your provider.

  3. Click on the "FRITZ!OS file" tab. If the tab is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  4. Click "Save Settings".

Note:Save your FRITZ!Box settings again under "System > Backup" right after successfully completing the installation. Then you can always restore a working configuration.

  5. Click the "Browse..." or "Choose File" button.
  6. Select the FRITZ!OS file you downloaded (image file).
  7. Click the "Start Update" button.
