Google Pixel cannot establish a VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box

Although the VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box is set up in Android, a Google Pixel with Android 11 or Android 12 cannot establish a VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box. No error messages are displayed on the smartphone or in the event log of the FRITZ!Box.

Cause

  • The Google Pixel does not correctly resolve the VPN server address in Android 11 /12 if the APN (Access Point Name) configured in the smartphone supports both IPv4 and IPv6.

Note:The APN defines the access point (gateway) between the mobile network and the internet and it is set up automatically when the SIM card is inserted.

Installing Android 13 or later

  1. Install Android 13 or later on the smartphone.

Note:Android 13 is available for all Pixel models starting with Pixel 4. Refer to Google for information on how to update.

Workaround

If you are using a Pixel 3 or older for which Android 13 is not available, set up an APN that only supports IPv4 in the smartphone as a workaround:

  1. Open the "Settings" on your smartphone.
  2. Tap "Network & Internet" in the "Settings".
  3. Tap "Internet".
  4. Tap the gear symbol after the entry for your mobile network provider.
  5. Tap "Access point names (APNs)" and then the APN being used.
  6. Tap "APN protocol" and then "IPv4".
  7. If you are using the mobile network from Deutsche Telekom with the APN "internet.v6.telekom", tap "APN", change the APN to "internet.telekom", and tap "OK".
  8. Tap the menu symbol on the top right and then tap "Save".
