Setting up an IPv6 subnet in the FRITZ!Box

You can use a router with its own IPv6 subnet in the FRITZ!Box home network. In this case, you do not need to configure static routes for the IPv6 subnet because the FRITZ!Box and the IPv6 router automatically exchange all of the necessary routing information.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box must obtain an IPv6 prefix longer than 64 bits (for example /60 or /56) when it connects to the internet.

    Note:The IPv6 prefix is displayed in the FRITZ!Box user interface under "Internet > Online Monitor" in the line "Internet, IPv6".

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Configuring the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
  4. Click "Additional Settings" in the section "WAN setting" or "LAN Settings" to display all of the settings.
  5. Click on "IPv6 Settings".
  6. Enable the option "Allow IPv6 prefixes announced by other IPv6 routers in the home network" in the section "Additional IPv6 Routers in the Home Network".
  7. Enable the options "Enable DHCPv6 server in the FRITZ!Box for the home network" and "Assign DNS server, prefix (IA_PD) and IPv6 address (IA_NA)" in the section "DHCPv6 Servers in the Home Network".
  8. Click "Apply" to save the settings and on the FRITZ!Box, confirm that the procedure may be executed, if you are asked to do so.

2 Configuring the IPv6 router

  1. Configure the IPv6 router so that it requests its own prefix from the FRITZ!Box using IPv6 prefix delegation and announces its routing information to the FRITZ!Box via router advertisement.

    Note:You can find information on configuring the IPv6 router in its manual, or consult its manufacturer directly.

The router is now configured for use with its own IPv6 subnet and receives a /62 prefix from the FRITZ!Box using DHCPv6 prefix delegation.
