Unable to access the internet over a VPN connection
Although the VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box was successfully established, you cannot access the internet over the connection. While the VPN connection is active, the device either cannot access the internet or still sends all web requests directly to the internet and not over the VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box.
Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the problem is solved.
Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.
1 Restarting the FRITZ!Box
You may be temporarily unable to correctly establish the VPN connection due to an error in the FRITZ!Box or its internet connection. Therefore, restart the FRITZ!Box so that it reinitializes the firewall and re-establishes the internet connection:
- Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Backup" in the "System" menu.
- Click on the "Restart" tab.
- Click the "Restart" button.
2 Adjusting the FRITZ!Box's VPN settings
If you connected two FRITZ!Box networks via IPSec (LAN-LAN linkup), the option "Send all network traffic via the VPN connection" must be enabled so that web requests are forwarded to the remote FRITZ!Box:
- Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Permit Access" in the "Internet" menu.
- Click the "VPN (IPSec)" tab.
- Click the (Edit) button next to the respective VPN connection.
- Enter the password required to establish the VPN connection in the field "VPN password (pre-shared key)".
- Click "Advanced Settings for Network Traffic".
- Enable the option "Send all network traffic via the VPN connection".
- Click "Apply" to save the settings and on the FRITZ!Box, confirm that the procedure may be executed, if you are asked to do so. The internet connection will be cleared briefly and then re-established right away.
3 Configuring parental controls to allow internet access
If you connected two networks via VPN (LAN-LAN linkup), the device's internet access may not be blocked by the FRITZ!Box parental controls of one of the FRITZ!Boxes involved. Therefore, make sure that the device has unrestricted internet access:
- Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Filter" in the "Internet" menu.
- Click on the "Parental Controls" tab.
- Check whether the device that is to access the internet via the VPN connection is displayed in the list of home network devices.
- If the device is displayed, click "Change Access Profiles" and select the access profile "Unrestricted" for the device or configure the access profile used by the device so that the device can access the internet.
- If the device is not displayed, the devices uses the "standard" access profile. In this case, configure the "standard" access profile so that the device can access the internet.
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
4 Deleting a VPN connection and reconfiguring it
If you still cannot access the internet over the VPN connection, then the VPN connection is configured incorrectly, for example due to a typing error, an incorrect MyFRITZ! address, or errors made when editing the settings file. Therefore, reconfigure the VPN connection:
- Delete the VPN connection on the device and in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Reconfigure the VPN connection in the FRITZ!Box. Proceed as described in the corresponding guide:
- Setting up a WireGuard VPN to the FRITZ!Box on a smartphone or tablet
