Accessing FRITZ!Box from the home network with user accounts

User accounts allow you to control who can access which areas of the FRITZ!Box. For example, you can grant a user permission to only access your vacation photos on a USB storage device connected to the FRITZ!Box. Or you can set up a user who may listen to answering machine messages and use all of the FRITZ!App Fon functions, but has no further access to your FRITZ!Box.

You need to have at least one user who is allowed to configure FRITZ!Box settings in order to manage the rights and still have access to all of the settings. This user can access the user interface by entering http://fritz.box.
Assign other users without access to the FRITZ!Box settings just the rights you want to grant them. These users must then enter the address http://myfritz.box to access the FRITZ!Box and their rights are restricted.

In this guide we give you step-by-step instructions on setting up user accounts, assigning rights, and how to then log in to the FRITZ!Box.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • A maximum of 18 user accounts can be set up.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Creating a user account with the right to configure FRITZ!Box settings

Create at least one user account that you can access the FRITZ!Box settings with:

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "FRITZ!Box Users" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click the "Add User" button.
  4. Enable the option "User account enabled".
  5. Enter a name and password for the user in the corresponding fields.
  6. If the user may also access the FRITZ!Box over the internet, enable the option "Access from the internet allowed".
  7. Enable the option "FRITZ!Box settings" under "Rights". You can assign additional rights according to your individual needs.
  8. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

2 Setting up users with restricted authorization

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "FRITZ!Box Users" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click the "Add User" button.
  4. Enable the option "User account enabled".
  5. Enter a name and password for the user in the corresponding fields.
  6. If the user may also access the services from the internet for which they have access rights, enable the option "Access from the internet allowed".
  7. Disable the option "FRITZ!Box settings" under "Rights" because otherwise the user can access all of the settings.
  8. Assign additional rights according to the individual needs of the user.
  9. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

3 Enabling login to the home network with username and password

After you have created the users with the desired rights, enable login to the home network with the user accounts:

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "FRITZ!Box Users" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click on the "Login to the Home Network" tab.
  4. Enable the option "Login with FRITZ!Box username and password".
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Now you can only log in to the FRITZ!Box with a user account, i.e. after entering a username and password.

4 Logging in to the home network with a username and password

How a user logs in to the FRITZ!Box depends on the rights assigned to that user:

Important:Only users assigned the right "FRITZ!Box settings" can access the FRITZ!Box user interface directly by entering http://fritz.box!

  1. Call up http://fritz.box in a web browser if you are a user who may change FRITZ!Box settings.
  2. Call up http://myfritz.box in a web browser if you are a user who is not allowed to change FRITZ!Box settings.
