Unable to access the internet with FRITZ!WLAN Stick

A computer with a FRITZ!WLAN Stick cannot access the internet although the FRITZ!WLAN Stick is connected with the Wi-Fi network of the wireless router (for example FRITZ!Box). However, other devices connected to the router can access the internet.

One of the following error messages may be displayed in the "Network and Sharing Center" in Windows:

  • "Unidentified Network"
  • "Access: Local only"
  • "Access type: No internet access"

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the problem is solved.

1 Enabling the wireless router's DHCP server

To ensure that all of the devices connected to the wireless router automatically obtain the correct IP settings, make sure that the router's DHCP server is enabled:

Note:For the following instructions, we used a FRITZ!Box as an example. Refer to the manufacturer of the wireless router for information on setting it up; for example, consult the manual.

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
  4. If available, click "Additional Settings" in the section "WAN setting" or "LAN Settings" to display all of the settings.
  5. Click the button "IPv4 Settings" or "IPv4 Addresses". If the button is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  6. Enable the DHCP server and define the range from which the FRITZ!Box assigns IP addresses.

Note:The FRITZ!Box has the IP address 192.168.178.1 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) and assigns IP addresses from xxx.20 to xxx.200 in the factory settings.

  7. Click "OK" to save the settings.

2 Configuring a computer to automatically obtain IP settings

To ensure that the computer always uses the correct IP settings, make sure that it automatically obtains its IP settings from the FRITZ!Box (this is the default setting for most operating systems):

  1. Configure the computer to automatically obtain IP settings via DHCP.

3 Configuring the firewall

The following step is only necessary if firewall software is installed on the computer:

  1. Configure the firewall so that it allows connections to the wireless router. Refer to the manufacturer of the firewall for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.

4 Installing the latest driver for the FRITZ!WLAN Stick

  1. Call up our update area in a web browser.
  2. Select the product group "FRITZ!WLAN" and then your product.
  3. Download the latest driver for your FRITZ!WLAN Stick.
  4. Unzip the ZIP file to your computer, for example to the Desktop.
  5. Double-click the file "setup.exe" and follow the instructions.
