Changing FRITZ!Powerline's Wi-Fi settings

During setup, the FRITZ!Powerline device automatically adopts the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and Wi-Fi network key of the FRITZ!Box (or another router) to allow devices in the home network to quickly switch between Wi-Fi networks (Wi-Fi roaming). When used in a Mesh with a FRITZ!Box, the FRITZ!Powerline device also adopts all of the other Wi-Fi settings, adjusts them when the Mesh Master's settings are changed, and allows devices to switch to the wireless access point with the best Wi-Fi reception and also to the most suitable frequency band (Mesh Wi-Fi steering).

If necessary, you can also customize the FRITZ!Powerline device's Wi-Fi settings.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Powerline device.

1 Disabling the adoption of settings from the Mesh

If the FRITZ!Powerline device is used in a Mesh, you must first disable the adoption of settings in the FRITZ!Powerline device:

2 Changing the name of the Wi-Fi network (SSID)

  1. Click "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") in the user interface of FRITZ!Powerline.
  2. Click "Wi-Fi Network" ("Radio Network") in the "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") menu.
  3. Enter a unique name in the field "Name of the Wi-Fi network (SSID)".
  4. If you want to use different Wi-Fi network names for the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz frequency bands, click Additional Settings for the Wi-Fi Network", enable the option "Different names for the radio network on 2.4 and 5 GHz", and enter a unique name in each of the fields.

Important:We recommend using the same name for both frequency bands so that wireless devices are automatically steered to the most suitable frequency band (Mesh Wi-Fi steering).

  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  6. Reconfigure the Wi-Fi connection to the FRITZ!Powerline device.

3 Change the network key

  1. Click "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") in the user interface of FRITZ!Powerline.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") menu.
  3. Click on the "Encryption" tab.
  4. Enter a password in the "Network key" field. Use numerals, letters, and other characters, and mix upper and lower case letters.
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  6. Reconfigure the Wi-Fi connection to the FRITZ!Powerline device.

4 Enabling the MAC address filter

  1. Click "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") in the user interface of FRITZ!Powerline.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") menu.
  3. Click on the "Encryption" tab.
  4. Enable the option "Do not allow any new wireless devices" in the "Restrict Access to Wi-Fi" section.
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Now only wireless devices entered in the list under "Restrict Access to Wi-Fi" can connect to the FRITZ!Powerline device's Wi-Fi network. If you want to connect a new wireless device with the FRITZ!Powerline device, briefly disable the MAC address filter and do not re-enable it until the new wireless device has been connected to the FRITZ!Powerline device. The MAC address of the new wireless device will then be automatically added to the MAC address filter.

5 Setting up a Wi-Fi schedule

If you want to switch off the Wi-Fi network of the FRITZ!Powerline device and the FRITZ!Box's Wi-Fi network at different times, you can set up an individual schedule in the FRITZ!Powerline device:

Note:The schedule is applied regardless of whether you already switched the Wi-Fi network on or off manually. You can use the button on the FRITZ!Powerline device to enable the Wi-Fi network at any time.

  1. Click "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") in the user interface of FRITZ!Powerline.
  2. Click "Schedule" in the "Wi-Fi" menu.
  3. Enable the option "Use schedule for Wi-Fi network".
  4. Disable the option "Adopt scheduling settings from the FRITZ!Box" and define when the Wi-Fi network should be switched off.
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
