Integrating a FRITZ!Box into the home network via powerline

You can connect the FRITZ!Box to an existing FRITZ!Box over your home's electrical wiring, for example with FRITZ!Powerline, and configure it so that it uses the existing FRITZ!Box's internet connection (operation as a Mesh Repeater / an IP client).

The internet and telephony services configured in the FRITZ!Box with internet access are then available to the FRITZ!Box in the home network and the devices connected to it, such as computers and telephones.

1 Setting up the FRITZ!Box as a Mesh Repeater / IP client

Connecting the FRITZ!Box

  1. Use Wi-Fi or a network cable to connect a computer to the FRITZ!Box that you want to use in the home network.
  2. If the computer is already connected to the FRITZ!Box that establishes the internet connection, clear that connection.

Configuring the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Mesh" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Mesh Settings" tab.
  4. Enable the option "FRITZ!Box as a Mesh Repeater".
  5. Enable the option "This FRITZ!Box is a network device (IP client) in the home network [...]".
  6. Enable the option "via LAN".
  7. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

The FRITZ!Box is now configured for for operation in the home network.

Important:In this operating mode, the FRITZ!Box can no longer be reached at http://fritz.box. Instead, to access it you must use the Mesh or home network overview of the FRITZ!Box with internet access or the IP address assigned to it by the FRITZ!Box with internet access.

2 Connecting FRITZ!Box with the home network

Here we explain how to connect two FRITZ!Boxes with each other over your home's electrical wiring using FRITZ!Powerline as an example. Refer to the manufacturer of the adapter for information on setting up the other powerline adapter; for example, consult the manual.

Connecting FRITZ!Powerline adapters with each other

FRITZ!Powerline adapters from a set are already connected with each other and can be put into operation without configuring additional settings. If you purchased the FRITZ!Powerline adapters separately, you must connect the powerline adapters with each other first:

  1. Plug the FRITZ!Powerline adapter that you want to add to the powerline network into a power outlet near a FRITZ!Powerline adapter that is already part of the powerline network.
  2. Wait until the FRITZ!Powerline adapter is ready for operation and the "Power" LED or "WLAN" LED remains lit.
  3. Briefly push the connection button on both of the FRITZ!Powerline adapters. You can push the button on whichever FRITZ!Powerline adapter you want first. The "Powerline" LED flashes when you release it. Depending on the FRITZ!Powerline model, several other LEDs flash at the same time.

  4. The process is completed and the FRITZ!Powerline adapters are connected with each other as soon as the "Powerline" LED remains lit.

Connecting the FRITZ!Box

  1. Plug the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter into a power outlet near the FRITZ!Box with internet access.
  2. Use a network cable to connect the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter to a LAN port on the FRITZ!Box with internet access.
  3. Plug the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter into a power outlet near the FRITZ!Box in the home network.
  4. Use a network cable to connect the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter to a LAN port on the FRITZ!Box in the home network.
  5. As soon as the "Powerline" LEDs on the FRITZ!Powerline adapters remain lit, the FRITZ!Powerline adapters are connected and the network connection is established.

3 Setting up Mesh

If FRITZ!OS 7 or later is installed on the FRITZ!Box with internet access, connect the devices to form a Mesh.

  1. Push and hold down the connection button on the FRITZ!Box in the home network (see table) until its "WLAN" LED flashes. Other LEDs may also flash.
  2. Within 2 minutes: Push and hold down the connection button on the FRITZ!Box with internet access until its confirmation LED (see table) lights up. Other LEDs may also light up.

  3. The process is complete as soon as the FRITZ!Box with internet access marks the FRITZ!Box in the home network with the Mesh symbol in the Mesh Overview.

4 Setting up telephony

If you also want to use the telephone numbers configured in the FRITZ!Box with internet access with telephones connected to the FRITZ!Box in the home network:

  1. If FRITZ!OS 7 or later is installed on the FRITZ!Box with internet access, set up telephony in the Mesh.

5 Transmitting cable TV content (DVB-C) to the home network

If you want to transmit your cable provider's cable TV content to the home network as an IP stream, configure television reception in the FRITZ!Box:

  1. Configure the FRITZ!Box Cable for television reception via DVB-C.
