Cannot access the internet over guest access

Although devices can register with the FRITZ!Box's guest access, they cannot access the internet over the guest access. Either new devices do not obtain an IP address from the FRITZ!Box or internet access is only not possible when the captive portal is enabled.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the problem is solved.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Opening an HTTP page in the web browser

If the option "Permit login with guest access/hotspot only after consent to terms of use" is enabled, users must agree to the terms of use before being allowed to access the internet. However, the captive portal with terms of use is only displayed if an HTTP page is opened:

  1. Call up an HTTP page, for example our test page http://service.avm.de. Now the FRITZ!Box displays the captive portal for guest access.
  2. Agree to the terms of use of the guest access.

2 Reducing the validity period of IP addresses

180 IP addresses are available for guest access; they cannot be reassigned until the validity period (lease time) of 10 days has expired.

If you are using the FRITZ!Box as a hotspot in a hotel or café, for example, and many different devices log in to the guest access on a regular basis, the FRITZ!Box cannot assign any IP addresses to new wireless devices because all 180 IP addresses have already been assigned. Therefore, configure the FRITZ!Box so that IP addresses are only valid for one day:

Setting the validity period

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
  4. Click the "IPv4 Addresses" button. If the button is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  5. Enter 1 in the "Valid for" field.
  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

Removing devices from the user interface

The new validity period only applies to devices that are registered with the FRITZ!Box after the change was made. Therefore, delete all unused network devices:

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Connections" tab.
  4. In the "Idle Connections" section, click the (Delete) button next to the device that is to be deleted.

Note:Instead, you can also use the "Remove" button under the list of network devices to delete all of the unused devices whose settings you have not changed in the FRITZ!Box.

3 Disabling automatic proxy setup in Windows

Internet access over guest access may not function properly if Web Proxy Autodiscovery Protocol) is enabled in Windows:

  1. Click (Start) and then (Settings) in the Windows task bar.
  2. Click "Network & Internet" in the "Settings" menu.
  3. Click "Proxy".
  4. Disable the option "Automatically detect settings" in the section "Automatic proxy setup".
