Integrating a FRITZ!Box into the home network via powerline

You can connect a FRITZ!Box to an existing FRITZ!Box over your home's electrical wiring, for example with FRITZ!Powerline, and configure it so that it uses the existing FRITZ!Box's internet connection (operation as an IP client).

The internet and telephony services configured in the FRITZ!Box (router) with internet access are then available to the FRITZ!Box in the home network (IP client) and the devices connected to that FRITZ!Box, such as computers and telephones.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Setting up the router

In the factory settings, the FRITZ!Box automatically assigns the correct IP settings to all devices via DHCP. If you disabled the FRITZ!Box's DHCP server, re-enable it:

  1. Click "Home Network" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (router).
  2. Click "Network" or "Home Network Overview" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
  4. Click the "IPv4 Addresses" button. If the button is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  5. Enable the DHCP server and define the range from which the FRITZ!Box assigns IP addresses.

Note:The FRITZ!Box has the IP address (subnet mask and assigns IP addresses from xxx.20 to xxx.200 in the factory settings.

  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

2 Setting up the IP client

  1. Use Wi-Fi or a network cable to connect a computer to the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  2. If the computer is already connected to the FRITZ!Box (router), clear that connection.

Configuring the operating mode

  1. Click "Internet" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  2. Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Select "Other internet service provider" from the drop-down list "Internet service provider". With some regional settings, this entry will not be displayed until you select "More internet service providers".
  4. Enable the option "Connection to an external modem or router" in the "Connect via" or "Connection" section.
  5. Select "Share existing internet connection in the network (IP client mode)" in the section "Operating Mode".
  6. Enter the speeds of your internet connection in the "Downstream" (receive direction) and "Upstream" (send direction) fields.

    Enter 32000 for a downstream of 32 Mbit/s; enter 2000 for an upstream of 2 Mbit/s.

  7. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

The FRITZ!Box is now configured for operation as an IP client.

Note:When the FRITZ!Box is configured as an IP client, it can no longer be reached at; instead, you must use the Mesh or home network overview of the FRITZ!Box (router) or use the IP address assigned to it by the FRITZ!Box (router).

3 Connecting the IP client with the home network

Here we explain how to connect two FRITZ!Boxes with each other over your home's electrical wiring using FRITZ!Powerline as an example. Refer to the manufacturer of the adapter for information on setting up the other powerline adapter; for example, consult the manual.

  1. Plug the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter into a power outlet near the FRITZ!Box (router).
  2. Use a network cable to connect the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter to a LAN port on the FRITZ!Box (router).
  3. Plug the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter into a power outlet near the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  4. Use a network cable to connect the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter to the "LAN 1" port on the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  5. As soon as the "Powerline" LEDs on the FRITZ!Powerline adapters remain lit, the FRITZ!Powerline adapters are connected and the network connection is established.

4 Setting up telephony

If you also want to use the telephone numbers configured in the FRITZ!Box (router) with telephones connected to the FRITZ!Box (IP client):

5 Setting up Wi-Fi

You can use the IP client as an additional wireless access point. This way your wireless devices can access the internet and other devices in the home network over the IP client, even if the Wi-Fi network of the FRITZ!Box (router) is not available.

Configure the following settings in the IP client so your wireless devices always automatically connect with the FRITZ!Box with the strongest signal (Wi-Fi roaming):

  1. Click "Wi-Fi" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (IP client).
  2. Click "Wi-Fi Network" ("Radio Network") in the "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") menu.
  3. For the frequency band being used, enter the Wi-Fi network name of the FRITZ!Box (router) in the field "Name of the Wi-Fi network (SSID)".
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  5. If you disabled automatic channel selection in the FRITZ!Box (router) and set a Wi-Fi channel, set the same Wi-Fi channel in the FRITZ!Box (IP client):
    1. Click "Wi-Fi Channel" ("Radio Channel") in the "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") menu.
    2. Enable the option "Adjust Wi-Fi channel settings" ("Adjust radio channel settings") in the section "Wi-Fi Channel Settings".
    3. From the drop-down list "Wi-Fi Channel" ("Radio Channel"), select the channel used by the FRITZ!Box (router) for the Wi-Fi frequency band being used.
    4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  6. Click "Security" in the "Wi-Fi" menu.
  7. Enable the option "WPA encryption".
  8. Select "WPA2 (CCMP)" for the "WPA mode". If not all of your wireless devices support WPA2 encryption, select "WPA + WPA2".
  9. Enter the network key of the FRITZ!Box (router) in the "Network key" field.
  10. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
