Setting up IPv6 port sharing in the FRITZ!Box

By default, the FRITZ!Box's firewall protects all of the devices in the FRITZ!Box home network from incoming connections and unwanted data from the internet.

You can set up IPv6 port sharing to allow users in the internet to access certain devices that are IPv6 compatible (for example NAS systems), web servers, or remote maintenance servers and other server services in your home network.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box must obtain an IPv6 address from the internet service provider.
  • The device or server service you want to set up port sharing for must support the IPv6 protocol.
  • You can only access the device or server service with IPv6 internet connections.

Note:You can test whether a device can access the internet over IPv6 on a particular internet connection by calling up www.test-ipv6.com or www.ipv6-test.com on the device in question.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Preparations

Determining ports and IP protocols

  1. Determine which ports and IP protocols are used by the server service or device to accept incoming connections. Refer to the manufacturer for this information, for example consult the manual.

Configuring the device's firewall

If the server service or application is installed on a device with its own firewall (for example Windows firewall), the firewall must also be configured:

  1. Configure the device's firewall according to the manufacturer's instructions to allow access to the server service or application from the FRITZ!Box home network.

2 Setting up port sharing in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Permit Access" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on the "IPv6" tab. If the tab is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  4. Click the (Edit) button for the (computer) name of the device for which the port sharing rule is to be configured, and then click "New Sharing". If you have not configured any port sharings for the device yet:
    1. Click "New Device".
    2. Select the (computer) name of the device from the drop-down list "Name".

Note:All network devices that automatically obtain their IPv6 settings (DHCP) from the FRITZ!Box are listed in the drop-down list "Name". If the network device is not listed, select "User-defined", enter the name and Interface ID of the network device.

  5. Select the IP protocol (TCP or UDP) that you want to set up port sharing for from the drop-down list "Protocol".
  6. To enable port sharing for a single port, enter the number of the port for incoming internet connections in the "From port" and "through port" or "to port" fields.
    • To enable port sharing for a port range, enter the first port for incoming internet connections in the "From port" field and the last port in the "through port" or "to port" field.
  7. Click "OK" to save the settings.

3 Setting up the FRITZ!Box for access over the internet

Setting up dynamic DNS

The following steps are only necessary if your dynamic DNS provider supports IPv6 and you want the server service to always be accessible over the internet under a unique address:

  1. Set up dynamic DNS in the FRITZ!Box.

Maintaining a permanent internet connection

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click "Change connection settings".
  4. Enable the option "Maintain permanently (recommended for flat rates)". If the option is not shown, the FRITZ!Box is already permanently connected to the internet.
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
