Type and number of USB devices that can be connected to the FRITZ!Box

You can connect various USB devices such as printers or storage devices to both of the USB 2.0 ports on the FRITZ!Box. The devices are then available in the FRITZ!Box home network.

1 Supported USB device classes

The FRITZ!Box supports USB devices from the following device classes:

  • USB storage device

Note:The FRITZ!Box supports USB storage devices with a maximum of four partitions formatted with the file system NTFS, FAT/FAT32 or ext2. Each partition may be up to 4 terabytes in size.

  • Mobile network dongle (LTE/UMTS/HSPA)
  • USB printer
  • USB hub
  • When using the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software: Scanners and other USB devices that do not require isochronous transfer.

Note:The USB remote connection software is available for Windows 10 / 8 / 7. Isochronous USB devices such as webcams require the instant and continuous transmission of data ("real-time") and cannot be used with the FRITZ!Box.

2 Total number of USB devices

If you use a USB hub, you can connect up to four USB devices (not including the USB hub) to the FRITZ! Box at the same time, including a maximum of one USB printer and a mobile network dongle. If you use the FRITZ!Box remote connection software, you can connect up to three USB devices (not including the USB hub) to the FRITZ!Box at the same time.

The FRITZ!Box treats all-in-one devices as several separate USB devices. A printer with an integrated memory card reader is recognized as a USB printer and a USB storage device, for example.

For instance, you can use the following USB devices with the FRITZ!Box:

  • four USB storage devices
  • three USB storage devices and one USB printer
  • two USB storage devices, one USB printer, and one mobile network dongle
  • one USB storage device, one USB printer, and one USB scanner

Note:In accordance with the USB 2.0 specification, the FRITZ!Box supplies USB devices with a total of up to 500 mA. Connect devices that require more power to the FRITZ!Box via a USB hub with its own power supply (active USB hub).

3 Supported USB standards

USB devices that comply with the following USB standards can be used with the FRITZ!Box:

  • USB 3.0 (if the device does not require more than 500 mA as allowed by USB 2.0)

Note:USB 3.0 devices function according to USB 2.0 when connected to the FRITZ!Box.

  • USB 2.0
  • USB 1.1
