Finding the ideal location for the FRITZ!Repeater

The correct positioning of your FRITZ!Repeater is a key factor when extending the Wi-Fi range of your home network. The quality of the connection between the FRITZ!Repeater and the router (for example FRITZ!Box) is just as important as the quality of the connection between the FRITZ!Repeater and the wireless devices connected to it.

If the FRITZ!Repeater is connected to the router via Wi-Fi, you must find a location where the FRITZ!Repeater is capable of establishing a fast and stable connection to the router, and at the same time its own Wi-Fi network must be readily accessible for wireless devices.

1 Checking the connection quality

  1. Check how many of the five field strength bars of the "wireless LAN field strength" symbol on the FRITZ!Repeater light up.
  2. If at least three of the field strength bars light up, the quality of the Wi-Fi connection is sufficient.
    • If only one or two field strength bars light up, the quality of the Wi-Fi connection is poor.
  3. If the FRITZ!Repeater indicates that the quality of the connection is poor, position it elsewhere. Note the tips given in this guide on finding the ideal position.

2 Tips on finding the ideal location

  1. If possible, do not position the FRITZ!Repeater directly behind or under an obstacle such as pieces of furniture or a heater. If necessary, you can also plug the FRITZ!Repeater into a power strip or use it with an extension cord.
  2. Do not position the FRITZ!Repeater directly in the corner of a room.
  3. Position the FRITZ!Repeater so that there are as few obstacles as possible between it, the router, and other wireless devices. Especially metallic objects or objects containing water, such as radiators, refrigerators, or even houseplants, significantly reduce the quality of the Wi-Fi signal.
  4. Position the FRITZ!Repeater away from other radio transmitters, such as microwaves, wireless speakers, or Bluetooth devices.
