Wireless connection to FRITZ!WLAN Repeater drops frequently

The wireless connection (WiFi) from the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater to the wireless router (for example a FRITZ!Box) and/or the wireless connection from a notebook, smartphone, or another wireless device to the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater drops frequently.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the problem persists.

1 Adjusting the encryption type

If your wireless router is not a FRITZ!Box, then the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater's connection to the router may drop if it does not fully support the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater's encryption method. In the factory settings, the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater supports the secure encryption methods WPA2 and WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) at the same time. Make sure that your wireless router is set for one of the following encryption methods:

  1. Enable the encryption method WPA2 (CCMP) or WPA (TKIP) in the wireless router's settings.

2 Updating wireless devices

New firmware and driver versions contain bug fixes as well as optimizations. Therefore, make sure that all of the devices are using the latest software version:

Installing the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater

  1. Install the latest FRITZ!OS on your FRITZ!WLAN Repeater.

Installing the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box

  1. Install the latest FRITZ!OS on the FRITZ!Box.

Installing the latest firmware for the wireless router

  1. Install the latest firmware on your router.

Note:Refer to the manufacturer of the device for information on how to update it, for example consult the manual.

Installing the latest software for the wireless device

  1. Install the latest driver for your computer's wireless network adapter or the latest operating system, for example Android, iOS, for the wireless device.

Note:Refer to the manufacturer for information on how to update, for example consult the manual.
You can find the latest drivers for the FRITZ!WLAN Sticks in our download area.

3 Automatically configuring wireless channel settings

Configure the following settings so that the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater checks the wireless environment on a regular basis and automatically selects the best wireless channel settings.

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the user interface of the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Set radio channel settings automatically (recommended)".
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings. Now wireless connections to the FRITZ!WLAN-Repeater are briefly cleared and then automatically reestablished.

4 Finding the ideal location for FRITZ!WLAN Repeater and router

  1. If possible, position the wireless router in a central location.
  2. Do not position the wireless router directly in the corner of a room.
  3. Position the wireless router so that it is as unobstructed as possible, i.e. not directly in back of or under an obstacle such as pieces of furniture or a heater.
  4. Position the wireless router as high in the room as possible, for example on a shelf.
  5. Position the wireless router so that there are as few obstacles as possible between it and other wireless devices. Especially metallic objects or objects containing water, for example radiators, refrigerators, or even houseplants, significantly reduce the quality of the wireless signal.
  6. Position the wireless router away from other transmitters, for example microwaves, wireless speakers, or Bluetooth devices.
  7. Find the ideal location for the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater.

5 Setting the wireless router's transmitter power

Note:We used a FRITZ!Box as an example for the configuration. If you are using a different wireless router, refer to the device's manufacturer for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. If the option "Set radio channel settings automatically (recommended)" is enabled, then the FRITZ!Box is already using its maximum transmitter power.
    • If the option "Adjust radio channel settings" is enabled:
      1. Click "Additional settings" (if available).
      2. Select "100%" from the drop-down list "Maximum transmitter power". If the drop-down list is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
      3. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

6 Changing the name of the wireless network (SSID)

If there are other wireless networks with the same name in the immediate vicinity, wireless devices may automatically attempt to connect to the wrong wireless network. To avoid this, give your wireless router a unique name:

Note:We used a FRITZ!Box as an example for the configuration. If you are using a different wireless router, refer to the device's manufacturer for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. In the field "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)", enter a unique name for the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz frequency band (if applicable). If only one field is displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

All wireless connections are cleared when you apply the new wireless network name. You must then reconfigure the wireless connection from the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater to the wireless router as well as the wireless connections to your other devices.
