Connecting FRITZ!WLAN Repeater with a wireless router using the 5 GHz frequency band

The FRITZ!WLAN Repeater can extend the wireless network of a wireless router (for example a FRITZ!Box) in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency band.

If both frequency bands are enabled in the wireless router at the same time, by default the repeater uses the 2.4 GHz frequency band to establish the wireless connection if you set it up with WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). To establish a connection over the 5 GHz frequency band, you must disable the 2.4 GHz frequency band in the wireless router when setting up the repeater.

1 Disabling the 2.4 GHz frequency band in the wireless router

Note:We used a FRITZ!Box as an example for configuration. If you are using a different wireless router, refer to the device's manufacturer for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Disable the option "Wireless radio network enabled" in the section "2.4-GHz Frequency Band". If the FRITZ!Box supports more than one frequency band but only one is displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

2 Connecting the repeater to the wireless router

Note:We used a FRITZ!Box as an example for configuration. If you are using a different wireless router, refer to the device's manufacturer for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.

  1. For setup, plug the repeater into an outlet near the FRITZ!Box.
  2. Wait until the "Power" and "WLAN" LEDs on the repeater remain lit.
  3. Push and hold the "WPS" button on the repeater until its "WLAN" LED flashes (about 6 seconds).
  4. Within 2 minutes: Push and hold the "Connect", "WLAN", or "WPS" button on the FRITZ!Box until its "WLAN" LED flashes.
  5. One or more LEDs indicating signal strength remain lit on the repeater once configuration is completed.
  6. Plug the repeater in wherever you want.

Now the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater establishes the connection to the wireless router using the 5 GHz frequency band. Now you can re-enable the 2.4 GHz frequency band in the wireless router.
