Changing the FRITZ!Repeater's Wi-Fi settings

When setting up the FRITZ!Repeater, it automatically adopts the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and network key of the FRITZ!Box (or another router) to allow devices to use wireless roaming. If the FRITZ!Repeater is used in a Mesh with a FRITZ!Box, the FRITZ!Repeater also adopts all of the other Wi-Fi settings, automatically adjusts them when the Mesh Master's settings are changed, and enables the devices to use Mesh WiFi steering.

You can also configure the FRITZ!Repeater's Wi-Fi settings according to your individual needs.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Repeater.

1 Disabling the adoption of settings from the Mesh

When used in a Mesh, you must first disable the adoption of settings in the FRITZ!Repeater:

2 Changing the name of the Wi-Fi network (SSID)

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the user interface of the FRITZ!Repeater.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enter a unique name in the field "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)".
  4. If you want to use different Wi-Fi network names for the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz frequency bands, enable the option "Different names for the radio network on 2.4 and 5 GHz" and enter unique names in both fields.

Important:We recommend using the same name for both frequency bands so that wireless devices can be automatically steered to the most suitable frequency band (Mesh Wi-Fi Steering).

  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  6. Reconfigure the Wi-Fi connection to the FRITZ!Repeater.

3 Change the Wi-Fi network key

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the user interface of the FRITZ!Repeater.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Click on the "Encryption" tab.
  4. Enter a password in the "Network key" field. Use numerals, letters, and other characters, and combine capitals and lower-case letters.
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  6. Reconfigure the Wi-Fi connection to the FRITZ!Repeater.

4 Enabling the MAC address filter

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the user interface of the FRITZ!Repeater.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Click on the "Encryption" tab.
  4. Enable the option "Do not allow any new wireless devices" in the "Restricting wireless LAN access" section.
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Now only wireless devices listed under "Restricting wireless LAN access" can connect to the FRITZ!Repeater's Wi-Fi network. If you want to connect a new wireless device with the FRITZ!Repeater, briefly disable the MAC address filter and do not re-enable it until the new wireless device has been connected with the FRITZ!Repeater. This automatically adds the MAC address of the new wireless device to the MAC address filter.

5 Setting up a Wi-Fi schedule

You can set up an individual schedule in the FRITZ!Repeater if you want to switch off its Wi-Fi network and the FRITZ!Box's Wi-Fi network at different times:

Note:The schedule is applied regardless of whether the Wi-Fi network was switched on or off manually beforehand. You can use the "WPS" button on the FRITZ!Repeater to enable the Wi-Fi network at any time.

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the user interface of the FRITZ!Repeater.
  2. Click "Schedule" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Use schedule for wireless radio network".
  4. Disable the option "Adopt scheduling settings from the FRITZ!Box" and define when the Wi-Fi network should be switched off.
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
