Setting up wireless guest access (private hotspot) in FRITZ!Powerline

If you use the FRITZ!Powerline together with a FRITZ!Box, you can use the guest access function to set up your FRITZ!Powerline as a wireless hotspot. This way guests can enjoy fast and secure Internet access without having to give them the network key of your private wireless network (WiFi). The wireless devices used by your guests (for example notebooks, smartphones) are completely isolated from your home network. They cannot access other network devices or the user interface of FRITZ!Powerline or your FRITZ!Box.

There are two ways for FRITZ!Powerline to make the guest access available:

  • FRITZ!Powerline applies all settings for guest access from the FRITZ!Box. The wireless devices used by your guests then automatically connect to the guest network with the strongest signal (roaming). If you limited the guest access in the FRITZ!Box, for example to certain times or web sites, then these restrictions are also valid for the wireless devices connected to FRITZ!Powerline.
  • FRITZ!Powerline provides an additional wireless network with separate security settings. The wireless devices used by your guests must then either connect to the guest network of the FRITZ!Box or the guest network of FRITZ!Powerline. If a captive portal is configured in the FRITZ!Box, then it is displayed when accessing the FRITZ!Powerline's guest access.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box models 7270 and 7240 do not support FRITZ!Powerline's guest access.
  • FRITZ!Powerline must be connected with a FRITZ!Box with FRITZ!OS 6 or later.
  • IPTV playback and other FRITZ!Box functions (such as port sharing, telephony) are not available when using guest access.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for FRITZ!Powerline.

Follow the instructions in the section that describes the desired scenario.

1 Using the FRITZ!Box guest access

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Guest Access" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Apply settings for guest access from the FRITZ!Box".

Note:In order to apply the settings for guest access, wireless guest access must be enabled in the FRITZ!Box (router).

  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Guest access is now configured and the wireless devices used by your guests automatically connect to the guest network with the strongest signal.

If you change the settings for guest access in the FRITZ!Box later, push the "WLAN" or "WPS" button on the FRITZ!Box and hold it down until the "WLAN" LED starts to flash. This causes the new settings to be transmitted to FRITZ!Powerline.

2 Using FRITZ!Powerline's guest access

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Guest Access" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Disable the "Apply settings for guest access from the FRITZ!Box" option.
  4. Enable the guest access.
  5. For the "Name of the guest radio network (SSID)", enter the name that guests should see when they search for wireless networks.
  6. Select the encryption method from the drop-down list "Encryption". WPA2 encryption offers the best security.
  7. Enter a password of your choice that is between 8 and 63 characters long in the "Network key" field.

Important:To ensure optimal security, the password should be at least 20 characters long and contain capital and lower-case letters (but not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, é, í), digits, and other characters.

  8. If you want guest access to be disabled automatically, enable the corresponding option and define when it should be disabled.
  9. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
