Wireless device cannot find FRITZ!Powerline's wireless network

A notebook, smartphone, tablet, or another wireless device cannot find FRITZ!Powerline's wireless network (WiFi). When searching for wireless networks, it does not display the name of FRITZ!Powerline's wireless network (SSID).

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the problem persists.

1 Enabling the wireless network

The following step is only necessary if the "WLAN" LED on FRITZ!Powerline is not lit:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Wireless radio network enabled".
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

2 Enabling the wireless network adapter

Some notebooks have a special switch or a key combination to switch integrated wireless network adapters on and off:

  • Enable the wireless adapter of the wireless device that you want to connect to FRITZ!Powerline's wireless network.

Note:Refer to the manufacturer of the device for information on enabling it, for example consult the manual.

3 Installing the latest software for the wireless device

  • Install the latest driver for your computer's wireless network adapter or the latest operating system, for example Android, iOS, for the wireless device.

Note:Refer to the manufacturer for information on updating the device, for example consult the manual.
You can find the latest drivers for the FRITZ!WLAN Sticks in our download area.

4 Adjusting FRITZ!Powerline's wireless settings

Preparations

  • Use a network cable to connect a computer to a LAN port on FRITZ!Powerline so you can open the user interface and adjust the wireless settings.

Changing the name of the wireless network (SSID)

Some wireless devices cannot establish a wireless connection if the name of the wireless network contains special characters:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. In the fields "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)", enter a unique name for the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz frequency band without special characters. Since not all wireless devices support all special characters, we recommend using only standard Latin letters (not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, á, é, í) and numbers.

Important:We suggest using identical wireless network names for both frequency bands so that FRITZ!Powerline can automatically steer individual wireless devices to the most suitable frequency band (band steering).

  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Automatically configuring wireless channel settings

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Set radio channel settings automatically (recommended)".
  4. Click "Apply" to save the setting.

Adjusting wireless channels in the 2.4 GHz frequency band

Some wireless devices do not support channels 12 and 13 in the 2.4 GHz frequency range:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Adjust radio channel settings".
  4. Select "Auto channel" from the drop-down list "Radio channel in 2.4-GHz frequency band".
  5. Click "Additional Settings".
  6. Disable the option "Wireless auto channel including channel 12/13 (2.4 GHz frequency band)".
  7. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Adjusting wireless channels in the 5 GHz frequency band

Some wireless devices do not support the channels 52 to 140 in the 5 GHz frequency range:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Adjust radio channel settings".
  4. Select a channel between 36 and 48 from the drop-down list "Radio channel in 5-GHz frequency band".
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

5 Finding the ideal location for FRITZ!Powerline

  1. Do not position FRITZ!Powerline directly in the corner of a room.
  2. Position FRITZ!Powerline so that it is as unobstructed as possible, i.e. not directly in back of or under an obstacle such as pieces of furniture or a heater.
  3. Position the FRITZ!Powerline adapter so that there are as few obstacles as possible between it and other wireless devices. In particular, metallic objects or objects containing water, for example radiators, refrigerators, or even houseplants, significantly reduce the quality of the wireless signal.
  4. Position FRITZ!Powerline so that it is away from other transmitters, for example microwaves, wireless speakers, or Bluetooth devices.

6 Testing a different wireless device

  • Check whether a different wireless device can find FRITZ!Powerline's wireless network.

If the second wireless device is able to find FRITZ!Powerline's wireless network, then the first wireless device may be defective.
