Wireless connection to FRITZ!Powerline drops frequently

The wireless connection (WiFi) from a notebook, smartphone, or other wireless device to FRITZ!Powerline drops frequently.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for FRITZ!Powerline.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Installing the latest FRITZ!OS for FRITZ!Powerline

2 Installing the latest software for the wireless device

  • Install the latest driver for your computer's wireless network adapter or the latest operating system, for example Android, iOS, for the wireless device.

    Note:Refer to the manufacturer for information on updating the device, for example consult the manual.
    You can find the latest drivers for the FRITZ!WLAN Sticks in our download area.

3 Identifying sources of interference

  1. Turn off all devices that could interfere with the wireless network.

    Note:All devices that emit radio waves are possible sources of interference. These include other wireless devices, wireless speakers, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors or microwaves, for example.

  2. Check whether the wireless connection is still impaired.
    • If the wireless connection is no longer impaired:
      1. Turn the devices back on, one after the other.
      2. Each time you turn on a device, check whether the wireless connection is impaired again.
        • If you identify a device or devices causing interference, you have the following options:
          • Leave the devices that cause interference turned off,
            • or:
          • Enable or refresh the auto channel (see the section "Enabling or refreshing the auto channel"),
            • or:
          • Find the ideal location for the FRITZ!Powerline adapter (see the section "Finding the ideal location for wireless devices").

4 Enabling or refreshing the auto channel

When the auto channel is enabled, FRITZ!Powerline checks the wireless environment and automatically selects the most suitable wireless channel settings. The allocation of the frequency band can change significantly over the course of the day, though. FRITZ!Powerline does not refresh the auto channel as long as wireless devices are still connected with the adapter. However, you can manually refresh the auto channel at any time:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Set radio channel settings automatically (recommended)".
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

    Note:When you enable or refresh the auto channel, all wireless connections to FRITZ!Powerline are cleared and automatically re-established.

  5. Click the "Refresh Auto Channel" button.

5 Finding the ideal location for FRITZ!Powerline

  1. Do not position FRITZ!Powerline directly in the corner of a room.
  2. Position FRITZ!Powerline so that it is as unobstructed as possible, i.e. not directly in back of or under an obstacle such as pieces of furniture or a heater.
  3. Position the FRITZ!Powerline adapter so that there are as few obstacles as possible between it and other wireless devices. In particular, metallic objects or objects containing water, for example radiators, refrigerators, or even houseplants, significantly reduce the quality of the wireless signal.
  4. Position FRITZ!Powerline away from other transmitters, for example microwaves, wireless speakers, or Bluetooth devices.

6 Changing the name of the wireless network (SSID)

If there are other wireless networks with the same name in the vicinity, wireless devices may automatically attempt to connect to the wrong wireless network. To avoid this, give your FRITZ!Powerline a unique name:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. In the fields "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)", enter a unique name for the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz frequency band without special characters. Since not all wireless devices support all special characters, we recommend using only standard Latin letters (not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, á, é, í) and numbers.

    Important:We suggest using identical wireless network names for both frequency bands so that FRITZ!Powerline can automatically steer individual wireless devices to the most suitable frequency band (band steering).

  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

All wireless connections are cleared when you apply the new wireless network name. You must then reconfigure the wireless connections to FRITZ!Powerline.
