Wireless connection between FRITZ!Powerline and a wireless device drops frequently

The wireless connection between a notebook, smartphone, or other wireless device and FRITZ!Powerline drops frequently.


  • The quality of the wireless connection is influenced by surrounding structural conditions (for example thickness and reinforcement of the walls), the wireless device being used, and also by other electronic devices in the vicinity such as microwaves, baby monitors, wireless speakers, and Bluetooth devices.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for FRITZ!Powerline.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Wait for upcoming FRITZ!OS

This section only applies if FRITZ!Powerline is connected to the router using the wiring in your home or over a LAN connection and the error occurs since updating FRITZ!OS.

We are currently working on a solution and shall correct this behavior with a FRITZ!OS update for FRITZ!Powerline as soon as possible. We cannot give you an exact release date for the update yet.

Note:You can have the push service notify you by e-mail when new updates are available. This option can be enabled in the user interface under "System > Push Service".


You can install a beta version until a new FRITZ!OS update has been released; this issue has been resolved in this beta version:

  1. Call up in a web browser, switch to the folder "Beta", and then switch to the subfolder for your FRITZ!Powerline model.
  2. Download the beta version for your FRITZ!Powerline model to the computer.
  3. Unzip the zip file to your computer (for example to the Desktop).
  4. Install the beta version (image file) as described in the infobeta.txt file.

    Note:You can reinstall the regular FRITZ!OS for your FRITZ!Powerline at any time. The infobeta.txt file contains instructions on the procedure.

2 Installing the latest software for the wireless device

  • Install the latest driver for your computer's wireless network adapter or the latest operating system (for example Android, iOS) for the wireless device.

    Note:You can find information on updating the wireless network adapter or wireless device in its manual, or consult the manufacturer directly.
    You can find the latest drivers for the FRITZ!WLAN Sticks in our download area.

3 Changing the name of the wireless network (SSID)

If there are other wireless networks with the same name in the vicinity, wireless devices may automatically attempt to connect to the wrong wireless network. To avoid this, give your FRITZ!Powerline a unique name:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the user interface of FRITZ!Powerline.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enter a name of your choice that does not contain special characters for the "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)".

    Important:Not all wireless devices support all special characters. Therefore, only use standard Latin letters (not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, á, é, í) and numbers in the wireless network name.

  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

All wireless connections are cleared when you apply the new wireless network name. You must then reconfigure the wireless connections to FRITZ!Powerline.

4 Finding the ideal location for wireless devices

  • Do not position FRITZ!Powerline directly in the corner of a room.
  • Position FRITZ!Powerline so that it is as unobstructed as possible, i.e. not directly in back of or under an obstacle such as pieces of furniture or a heater.
  • Position the FRITZ!Powerline adapter so that there are as few obstacles as possible between it and the other wireless devices. In particular, metallic objects or objects containing water (for example a refrigerator, houseplants) significantly reduce the quality of the wireless signal.
  • Position FRITZ!Powerline so that it is away from other transmitters (for example microwaves, baby monitors, wireless speakers, Bluetooth devices).
  • For testing purposes, position FRITZ!Powerline and the wireless device as close as possible.

    Note:Once you have ruled out all other sources of error, you can increase the distance between the two devices again.

5 Identifying sources of interference

  1. Turn off all devices that could interfere with the wireless network, one after the other.

    Note:All devices that emit radio waves are possible sources of interference. These include other wireless devices, wireless speakers, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors or microwaves, for example.

  2. After you have turned off a device, check whether the wireless connection to FRITZ!Powerline is still impaired.

Once you have identified a device that causes interference, you can either leave it turned off or try to avoid the interference by setting the channel manually.

6 Selecting the best wireless channel

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Powerline user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Use the graph "Use of the Wireless LAN Channels" to determine which channel in the lower frequency range is least affected by other wireless networks and sources of interference.
  4. Enable the option "Adjust radio channel settings" in the "Radio Channel Settings" section.
  5. Select the wireless channel that was affected the least from the drop-down list "Radio channel".
  6. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  7. Check whether the issue with your wireless connection still occurs.
    • If the issue with the wireless connection still occurs:
      • Repeat steps 3 - 8 with a wireless channel in the middle and then with one in the higher frequency range. Once you have finished testing, use the wireless channel that was least affected by disturbances.

        Important:The diagram of the wireless environment only reflects the current situation! The allocation of the frequency bands can change significantly over the course of the day because many wireless networks are turned on when in use. Therefore, check several times to see which wireless channels are least affected by interference.
