Using a Wii U console in the FRITZ!Box home network
You can easily connect your Wii U console to the FRITZ!Box over Wi-Fi. The Wii U can then access the internet and Nintendo's online services.
Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.
1 Preparations
Enabling the FRITZ!Box's DHCP server
In the factory settings, the FRITZ!Box automatically assigns the correct IP settings to all devices via DHCP. If you disabled the FRITZ!Box's DHCP server, re-enable it:
- Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
- Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
- Click the "IPv4 Addresses" button. If the button is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
- Enable the DHCP server and define the range from which the FRITZ!Box assigns IP addresses.
Note:The FRITZ!Box has the IP address 192.168.178.1 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) and assigns IP addresses from xxx.20 to xxx.200 in the factory settings.
- Click "OK" to save the settings.
Preparing the FRITZ!Box for WPS
The FRITZ!Box is already prepared for WPS in the factory settings. If you changed the FRITZ!Box's Wi-Fi settings, configure the following settings:
- Click "Wi-Fi" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Security" in the "Wi-Fi" menu.
- Click on the "WPS Quick Connection" tab.
- Enable WPS.
- Select "Push-Button method (WPS-PBC, Push Button Configuration)" and click "Start WPS".
2 Connecting the Wii U to the FRITZ!Box
- Tap the "System Settings" button in the main menu of the Wii U GamePad.
- Tap "Internet" in the "System Settings" menu.
- Tap "Connect to the internet".
- Tap "Connection Types" in the upper left corner.
- Tap "Wi-Fi Protected SETUP".
- Tap "Push-Button Configuration".
- Push and hold down the "WPS" button on the FRITZ!Box for about 1 second until its "WLAN" LED flashes.
- Now the Wi-Fi connection is configured and established.
- Tap "OK" to save the connection settings.
- Tap "Set" to set the Wi-Fi connection as the default connection.
Now the Wii U is connected to the internet through the FRITZ!Box and you can play online games or use other functions offered by Nintendo's online services.
Note:Refer to Nintendo for further information on how to set up the Wii U, for example consult the manual.
3 Setting up port sharing for online games
By default, the FRITZ!Box's firewall protects all of the devices in the home network from incoming connections and unwanted data from the internet. To use a few online games (for example Call of Duty), other users from the internet must be able to access your Wii U.
If you are having problems with participating in online games, adjust the FRITZ!Box's settings:
Important:To be fully accessible from the internet, the FRITZ!Box requires a public IPv4 address.
Setting up automatic port sharing
Set up the FRITZ!Box for automatic port sharing so that the Wii U itself can open all of the ports it requires in the FRITZ!Box:
- Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
- Click on the "Network Connections" tab.
- Click the
(Edit) button next to the device you want to configure.
- Enable the option "Permit independent port sharing for this device".
- Click "OK" to save the settings.
Setting up static port sharing
If you still cannot connect to online games or the connection drops, configure the required port sharing settings manually:
- Set up static port sharing in the FRITZ!Box for the ports and IP protocols used by the online game.
Note:With just a few clicks in the internet you can find lists of ports used by online games, for example at www.portforward.com.
