FRITZ!Box 7490 Service

FRITZ!Box USB remote connection reports "Could not establish the connection to the device"

Although the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software displays the USB devices connected to the FRITZ!Box, you cannot connect them to a computer using the USB remote connection. The USB remote connection displays the following error message:

  • "Could not establish the connection to the device. If the connection still cannot be established, check the firewall settings to make sure that the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection is registered and enabled as an exception."

Cause

  • A firewall is interfering with the communication between the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection and the FRITZ!Box, the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection is not correctly configured, or it is not properly installed.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

1 Setting up the USB remote connection in FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "USB Devices" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "USB Remote Connection" tab.
  4. Enable the USB remote connection.
  5. Select the type of devices for which the USB remote connection should be enabled, for example "USB storage media".
  6. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

2 Configuring the computer's firewall

  • Configure an exception for the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection in the firewall on the computer with this application,
    • or:
  • Configure the firewall so that it allows incoming and outgoing TCP and UDP connections from port 2066 on the FRITZ!Box to any destination ports on the computer.

    Note:Refer to the manufacturer of the firewall for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.

3 Uninstalling the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software

Windows 10

  1. Click "Start" and then "Settings" in the Windows task bar.
  2. Click "Apps" in the "Settings" menu.
  3. Click on the entry "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection" and then "Uninstall" in the "Apps & features" section.
  4. Confirm your choice and click "Yes" in the window "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?".
  5. Click "Remove the application from this computer" in the window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" and then click "OK".

Windows 8

  1. Press the keyboard shortcut Windows key + X and select "Control Panel" from the context menu.
  2. Click "Programs" and then "Programs and Features".
  3. Double-click on the entry "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection".
    • The window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" opens.
  4. Select the option "Remove the application from this computer" in the window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" and click "OK".

Windows 7

  1. In Windows, click "Start" and then "Control Panel".
  2. Select "Category" from the drop-down list "View by:" on the top right ().
  3. Click "Uninstall a program".
  4. Double-click on the entry "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection".
    • The window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" opens.
  5. Select the option "Remove the application from this computer" in the window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" and click "OK".
