FRITZ!Box 7490 Service

Connecting two FRITZ!Boxes over powerline

If you have two FRITZ!Boxes, you can connect them over powerline (for example with FRITZ!Powerline). Internet and telephony services configured in the FRITZ!Box (router) connected to the DSL line are then also available to the second FRITZ!Box (IP client) and all of the network and telephony devices connected to it, such as computers and smartphones.

Important:The instructions for configuring the FRITZ!Box (router) are valid for the FRITZ!Box model given above this guide. For the instructions on configuring the FRITZ!Box (IP client), we used a FRITZ!Box with FRITZ!OS 6 as an example. You can find the version of FRITZ!OS on the "Overview" page of the FRITZ!Box user interface.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box (IP client) must support the operating mode "Share existing Internet connection in the network (IP client mode)".

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

1 Preparations

Determining the throughput of the Internet connection of the FRITZ!Box (router)

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "DSL Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on the "DSL" tab.
  4. Check and make note of how high the "Current throughput" (speed) for your Internet connection is in the send and receive direction.

Enabling the DHCP server of the FRITZ!Box (router)

The FRITZ!Box is configured as a DHCP server in the factory settings. If you disabled the FRITZ!Box's DHCP server, configure the following settings:

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Home Network Overview" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
  4. Click the "IPv4 Addresses" button.
  5. Enable the DHCP server and define the range from which the FRITZ!Box assigns IP addresses.

Note:The FRITZ!Box uses the IP address 192.168.178.1 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) and assigns IP addresses from xxx.20 to xxx.200 in the factory settings.

  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

  5. Select "Share existing Internet connection in the network (IP client mode)" in the "Operating Mode" section.
  6. Enter the data throughput of your Internet connection in the "Downstream" and "Upstream" fields.

    Example:
    Enter 32000 for a downstream of 32 Mbit/s; enter 2000 for an upstream of 2 Mbit/s.

  7. Click on "Change connection settings".
  8. Enter a new name of your choice for the FRITZ!Box (for example "attic") in the field "DHCP host name" in the "Change connection settings" section.

Note:In the future you can use this new name to open the user interface of this FRITZ!Box. Do not enter "fritz.box" because the FRITZ!Box (router) uses this name.

  9. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

The FRITZ!Box is now configured for operation as an IP client.

Important:In this operating mode, you can no longer open the user interface with http://fritz.box. Instead, proceed as described in the section "Opening the FRITZ!Box user interface" (see below).

Connecting the computer with the FRITZ!Box (router)

The following step is only necessary if the computer was previously connected with the FRITZ!Box (router) and you would like to re-connect it:
