What is band steering and how does it work?
Band steering balances the load in your wireless network and ensures that your router provides stable and fast connections.
Modern routers like the FRITZ!Box 7590 make the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency band available at the same time. However, wireless devices that are capabable of using both frequency bands do not always select the optimal frequency band.
Band steering technology enables wireless routers to recognize which frequency band is more suitable for a particular wireless device and automatically steers it to the more suitable frequency band.
Since it is easier for low frequencies to penetrate obstacles such as walls, metallic objects, or objects containing water, the 2.4 GHz frequency band offers a greater range than the 5 GHz frequency band. By contrast, the 5 GHz frequency band offers a faster connection in the vicinity of your wireless router because its frequency spectrum is wider than that of the 2.4 GHz frequency band. This allows more data to be transmitted in the same amount of time.
To improve the range of wireless devices in the 5 GHz frequency band, the FRITZ!Box checks whether the signal strength reaches a specific threshold. If it falls below this value, it means that the wireless device is on the edge of the range and the FRITZ!Box initiates a switch to the 2.4 GHz frequency band that has a greater range.
To avoid very heavy load in the 2.4 GHz frequency band, the FRITZ!Box checks which wireless devices can also connect to the 5 GHz frequency band. To do so, it deregisters all devices in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and briefly prohibits them from using the 2.4 GHz band. If a wireless device cannot register with the 5 GHz frequency band, the router allows the wireless device to re-register with the 2.4 GHz frequency band.
Starting with FRITZ!OS 6.80, the FRITZ!Box supports band steering. Both frequency bands must have identical wireless network names (SSIDs) in order to enable band steering. The first time a wireless device registers with the FRITZ!Box, the FRITZ!Box learns the device's properties. If the wireless device supports both frequency bands, then the FRITZ!Box steers it to the most suitable frequency band the next time it registers itself. If the FRITZ!Box is restarted, then it must relearn the properties of the individual wireless devices. Band steering also affects the wireless devices using the FRITZ!Box's wireless guest access.
