Setting up a wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box manually

You want to set up a wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box manually? ✔ Here is how to set up wireless LAN with the default password or your own password.

You can connect any wireless devices to the FRITZ!Box's wireless network (WiFi) so they can access the internet and other devices in your home network.

In this guide we show you how to set up the wireless connection manually by entering your FRITZ!Box's unique network key.

If your wireless devices support using the WPS method to set up connections automatically, proceed as described in the guide Pushing a button (WPS) to set up a wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box.

1 Determining the FRITZ!Box's wireless settings

Determining the wireless settings in the factory settings

If it is set to factory settings, you can find the FRITZ!Box's wireless settings on the bottom of the device:

  • The name of the wireless network (SSID) corresponds to the model name of the FRITZ!Box (for example FRITZ!Box 7490).
  • The network key corresponds to the numerical code next to the key symbol.

Determining the current wireless settings

If you are not sure whether the wireless settings on the bottom of the device are still valid, see the user interface for the current settings:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Make note of the name of the wireless network (SSID).
  4. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  5. Make note of the network key.

2 Establishing a wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box

Windows 10

  1. Click (Start) and then (Settings) in the Windows task bar.
  2. Click "Network and Internet" and then "Wi-Fi" in the "Settings" menu.
  3. In the list of available connections, click the one that displays the name of the FRITZ!Box's wireless network (SSID) and then "Connect".
  4. Enter the FRITZ!Box's network key in the field "Enter the network security key" and click "Next". Now the wireless connection is established.

Windows 8

  1. Press the keyboard shortcut Windows key + C.
    • The Windows sidebar now opens.
  2. Click "Settings" and then the wireless symbol in the Windows sidebar.
  3. In the list of available connections, click the one that displays the name of the FRITZ!Box's wireless network (SSID) and then "Connect".
  4. Enter the FRITZ!Box's network key in the field "Enter the network security key" and click "Next".
  5. Select the answer "Yes, turn on sharing and connect to devices". Now the wireless connection is established and the wireless symbol displays the field strength.

Windows 7

  1. Click the wireless symbol in the notification area of the Windows taskbar (Systray).
  2. In the list of available connections, click the one that displays the name of the FRITZ!Box's wireless network (SSID) and then "Connect".
  3. Enter the FRITZ!Box's network key in the "Security key" field and click "OK". Now the wireless connection is established and the field strength is displayed by the wireless symbol .

Apple macOS

  1. Click the wireless symbol in the upper corner of your screen in the menu bar (see figure).

  2. Select the name of the FRITZ!Box's wireless network (SSID) from the context menu.
  3. Enter the FRITZ!Box's network key in the "Password" field and click "OK". Now the wireless connection is established and the field strength is displayed by the wireless symbol.

Apple iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch)

  1. Tap "Settings" on the home screen.
  2. Tap "Wi-Fi" in the "Settings" menu.
  3. If wireless LAN is switched off, tap the "On / Off" symbol.
  4. Under "Choose a network..." tap the name of the FRITZ!Box's wireless network (SSID) (see fig.).

  5. Enter the FRITZ!Box's network key in the "Password" field and tap "Join". Now the wireless connection is established and the wireless symbol is displayed in the status bar next to the clock.

Android (for example Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy)

Note:It is especially easy to use FRITZ!App WLAN to connect your Android devices to the FRITZ!Box.

  1. Tap the "Settings" icon on the home screen of the Android device.
  2. Tap "Network & Internet" in the "Settings" menu.
  3. Tap "WiFi".
  4. If wireless LAN is switched off, tap "OFF" next to the entry "WiFi".
  5. Tap the connection with the wireless network name (SSID) of the FRITZ!Box.
  6. Enter the FRITZ!Box's network key in the "Password" field and tap "Connect". Now the wireless connection is established.

Linux and other operating systems or devices (for example NAS systems, network printer)

  1. Use your wireless device to search for wireless networks in the vicinity.

    Note:For instructions on establishing wireless connections, refer to the wireless device's manual or consult the manufacturer directly.

  2. Select the FRITZ!Box's wireless network (SSID) and enter the FRITZ!Box's network key, if asked to do so. Now the wireless connection is established.
