Sharing FRITZ!NAS contents via access link

The FRITZ!NAS user interface (http://fritz.nas) allows you to easily share individual files or folders with others by means of an access link. This way you can allow friends and relatives to access your pictures and videos from your last vacation over the internet without allowing them to change or delete files from FRITZ!NAS, for example.

The access link can be used to access the shared FRITZ!NAS contents at any time with any web browser without having to enter a user name or password.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box must obtain a public IPv4 address or an IPv6 address from the internet service provider.

Important:When used on a DS-Lite internet connection, the FRITZ!Box is only accessible from the internet over IPv6. When DS-Lite is active, the status "IPv4 over DS Lite" is displayed under "Connections" on the "Overview" page of the FRITZ!Box user interface.

  • Access links cannot be used to change or delete files contained in FRITZ!NAS.

Note:If you would like to allow users in the internet to change or delete FRITZ!NAS contents, set up internet access to FRITZ!NAS for these users.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for your FRITZ!Box.

1 Preparations

Setting up MyFRITZ!

With MyFRITZ! you can even access your FRITZ!Box over the internet at all times if the FRITZ!Box receives a different public IP address from your internet service provider on a regular basis:

Note:If you already use a different dynamic DNS service, you can also use this service instead of MyFRITZ!.

Maintaining a permanent internet connection

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on "Change connection settings".
  4. Enable the option "Maintain permanently (recommended for flat rates)". If the option is not shown, then the FRITZ!Box already remains permanently connected to the internet.
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

2 Creating an access link to FRITZ!NAS contents

  1. Call up FRITZ!NAS in a web browser.
  2. Switch to the directory that contains the file or folder you would like to share.
  3. Click the checkbox in front of the file or folder to mark it.
  4. Click the button (Release file or folder for sharing).
    • The window "Successfully released for sharing" (see fig.) is displayed.

  5. If you would like to restrict the validity of the access link, you can limit the access period and number of accesses allowed.
  6. Click on "Email" to send the access link to the default email client on the computer. This way you can easily send the access link by email to the people you want to grant access to.
  7. Click "OK".

Now the people you would like to grant access to shared content to only need to click on the access link to access the shared files.

Important:Even if the web browser describes the connection as "not trusted", opening the link does not pose any danger! The web browser only describes the connection as "not trusted" because the FRITZ!Box's individual security certificate is unknown to third party organizations that validate certificates. This does not pose a security risk!

Note:In the "Permit Access" section of FRITZ!NAS you can see all of the files and folders that you shared and unshare them again.
