Configuring network device for IPv6

In order to use the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) on your computers, smartphones, and other network devices, you must configure IPv6 on the devices connected to the FRITZ!Box.

Note:By default, IPv6 is already installed and enabled in Windows 10 / 8 / 7, macOS, and many other modern operating systems.

1 Configuring a network device

By default, IPv6 is already installed and enabled in Windows 10 / 8 / 7 and macOS. We recommend the following settings for IPv6 communication with the FRITZ!Box:

Windows 10

  1. Click "Start" and then "Settings" in the Windows task bar.
  2. Click "Network & Internet" in the "Settings" menu.
  3. Click "Change adapter options" in the "Change your networking settings" section.
  4. Click on the arrow next to the button (Change view) in the menu bar and select "Details".
  5. Right-click the LAN or wireless connection that lists the network adapter that connects the computer to the FRITZ!Box under "Device Name".
  6. Click "Properties".
  7. Select "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)".
  8. Click "Properties".
  9. Enable the options "Obtain an IPv6 address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
  10. Click "OK" to save the settings.

Windows 8

  1. Press the keyboard shortcut Windows key + X and select "Control Panel" from the context menu.
  2. Select "Category" from the drop-down list "View by:" on the top right ().
  3. Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center".
  4. Click "Change adapter settings".
  5. Click on the arrow next to the button (Change view) in the menu bar and select "Details".
  6. Right-click the LAN or wireless connection that lists the network adapter that connects the computer to the FRITZ!Box under "Device Name".
  7. Click "Properties".
  8. Select "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)".
  9. Click "Properties".
  10. Enable the options "Obtain an IPv6 address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
  11. Click "OK" to save the settings.

Windows 7

  1. In Windows, click "Start" and then "Control Panel".
  2. Select "Category" from the drop-down list "View by:" on the top right ().
  3. Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center".
  4. Click "Change adapter settings".
  5. Click on the arrow next to the "Change view" button in the menu bar and select "Details".
  6. Right-click the LAN or wireless connection that lists the network adapter that connects the computer to the FRITZ!Box under "Device Name".
  7. Click "Properties".
  8. Select "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)".
  9. Click "Properties".
  10. Enable the options "Obtain an IPv6 address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
  11. Click "OK" to save the settings.

macOS

  1. Open the Finder and click "Applications".
  2. Click "System Preferences" and "Network".
  3. If the computer is connected to the FRITZ!Box via wireless LAN, select "Wi-Fi" or "AirPort" in the left-hand window.
    • If the computer is connected to the FRITZ!Box using a network cable, select "Built-in Ethernet" in the left-hand window.
  4. Click "Advanced".
  5. Switch to the TCP/IP settings page and select the option "Using DHCP:" from the drop-down list "Configure IPv4". Select the option "Automatically" from the drop-down list "Configure IPv6".
  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

Linux and other operating systems or devices (for example NAS systems)

  • Configure the operating system or device to automatically obtain an IPv6 address and DNS server (DHCP). Refer to the manufacturer for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.
