Configuring Internet telephone numbers in FRITZ!Box

You can configure up to 20 Internet telephone numbers in the FRITZ!Box in order to make telephone calls over the Internet (Voice over IP). In the case of most Internet telephony providers, the FRITZ!Box automatically configures all of the settings required for the provider; with some providers, the telephone number is even configured automatically when your Internet connection is configured. You can even combine telephone numbers with the same registration data in a group of numbers and mange them jointly.

Besides this standard configuration, the FRITZ!Box also allows you to configure SIP trunks and SIP trunk lines.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

1 Configuring regional options

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Region and Language" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click on the "Regional Options" tab.
  4. Select the country from the drop-down list.

Important:Changing the regional options resets the telephony settings. You must then reconfigure all of the telephony settings (such as telephony devices, call diversion settings, dialing rules).

  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

2 Entering your location information

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.

Configuring an Internet telephone number (standard)

  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the "New Telephone Number" button.

Note:Whether the drop-down list is available and which providers are displayed depends on the regional options configured in the FRITZ!Box.

  6. Enter the Internet number (telephone number) and the account information (for example user name, password, registrar) in the corresponding fields. This information is supplied by your provider.
  7. If the option "Relay outgoing emergency calls without prefixes" is displayed, ask your provider whether calls to emergency numbers must be made with or without prefixes. Then, select the correct setting.
  8. If the option "Relay special rate numbers without prefixes" is displayed, ask your provider if calls to special rate numbers must be made with or without prefixes. Then, select the correct setting.
  9. If present, you can enable the option "Insert area code for outgoing calls". The area code is then automatically added when you make a call to a number that does not begin with "0", so you do not have to dial it.
  10. Click "Next" and follow the Wizard's instructions.

4 Adjusting the account information for "Other provider"

If you selected "Other provider" in the configuration wizard and the telephone number is not registered after completing the configuration, you may have to adjust the account information. With pre-selected Internet telephony providers, the FRITZ!Box configures the correct settings automatically:

Using own telephone number for registration

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the button (Edit) for the respective Internet telephone number.
  4. Enable or disable the option "Use Internet telephone number for registration". Which setting is required depends on the provider. Try both settings or ask your provider. There is no standard name for this parameter. Its technical acronym is "SIP URI".
  5. Click "OK" to save the settings.

Using REGISTER-fetch

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the button (Edit) for the respective Internet telephone number.
  4. Enable or disable the option "Provider does not support REGISTER-fetch". Which setting is required depends on the provider. Try both settings or ask your provider.
  5. Click "OK" to save the settings.

5 Enabling registration via an Internet connection

With some Internet service providers, a second Internet connection is established for Internet telephony; this connection can only use the Internet service provider's numbers. Therefore, enable the following option if you are using an Internet telephone number that is not from your Internet service provider. The FRITZ!Box will then use the same connection you surf with for this telephone number:

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the button (Edit) for the respective Internet telephone number.
  4. Enable the option "Always register via an Internet connection".
  5. Click "OK" to save the settings.

6 Enabling Internet telephony via the mobile network

The following step is only necessary if the FRITZ!Box is configured for Internet access via the mobile network, and you also would like to make Internet calls when the FRITZ!Box establishes the Internet connection over the mobile network:

ATTENTION!Some mobile broadband providers stipulate in their contracts that you cannot use your mobile Internet connection for Internet telephony. Ask your provider about the terms and conditions!

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Mobile Communications" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Enable the option "Use Internet telephony via the mobile Internet connection".
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
