Automatically dialing area code when making Internet calls over FRITZ!Box

Each time you call parties in your local calling area using an Internet telephone number, you normally need to dial the area code first. However, you can configure the FRITZ!Box so that it automatically adds the area code. When you then call a party in your local calling area, you simply have to enter the telephone number itself.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

1 Entering your location information

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click on the "Line Settings" tab.
  4. Select your country from the drop-down list under "Location Information". If your country is not included in the list, select "Other country".
  5. For the "Country code", enter the country code prefix in the first field and the country code in the second field (for example for Germany "00" and "49", see fig.).
  6. For the "Area code", enter the area code prefix in the first field and the area code in the second field (for example for Berlin "0" and "30", see fig.).

  7. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

2 Adjusting the number format

If the Configuration Wizard lists your Internet telephony provider, then the FRITZ!Box configures the following settings automatically. Therefore, these settings are not necessary for pre-configured providers and are only displayed if you select "other provider":

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the button (Edit) for the relevant Internet telephone number.
  4. Enable the necessary options for country code and area code in the "Telephone Number Format" section. Which options are required depends on the provider. Try different settings or ask your provider which options you must select. For example, common settings for Germany (0049) and Berlin (030) would be the following:
    • With prefix for country code and prefix for area code
      • Enable the option "With prefix (0049)" for the country code and "With prefix (030)" for the area code.
    • Without prefix for country code and without prefix for area code
      • Enable the option "Without prefix (49)" for the country code and "Without prefix (30)" for the area code.
    • No country code and prefix for area code
      • Enable the option "None" for the country code and "With prefix (030)" for the area code.
  5. If the option "Relay outgoing emergency calls without prefixes" is displayed, ask your Internet telephony provider whether calls to emergency numbers must be made with or without prefixes. Then, select the correct setting.
  6. If the option "Relay special rate numbers without prefixes" is displayed, ask your Internet telephony provider if calls to special rate numbers must be made with or without prefixes. Then, select the correct setting.
  7. Click "OK" to save the settings.
