USB storage access is slow
Data transmission between a computer and a USB hard drive or USB memory stick connected to the FRITZ!Box is slower than defined in the USB 2.0 specifications.
1 Throughput lower due to functional principle
In the case of integrated systems such as the FRITZ!Box, the highest possible throughput when accessing a USB storage device is lower than that of Windows computers, for example. This is due to its architecture and is influenced by
- software or communications protocols (SMB, FTP, USB remote connection) being used.
- architecture of and file system on the USB storage device (NTFS, FAT/FAT32, ext2).
Note:NTFS is a file system from Microsoft that was specially developed for use with Windows operating systems. The implementation of NTFS support by the Linux-based FRITZ!OS is technically sophisticated, which means that access via NTFS is slower than with other file systems.
- the use of encryption techniques (FTPS, FTP over SSL/TLS).
- transmission medium (wireless LAN/LAN) being used.
- FRITZ!Box functions currently in use and the FRITZ!OS being used.
Taking these factors and the FRITZ!Box model being used into consideration, throughput rates between 1 MB/s (8 Mbit/s) and 13 MB/s (104 Mbit/s) are possible.
If possible, we will implement optimizations in future FRITZ!OS versions that increase the throughput.
