Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a cable connection

The FRITZ!Box Cable is optimally prepared for use with a cable connection. FRITZ!Boxes made available by cable providers are already activated for the specific cable connection they will be used with and are configured automatically.

If your FRITZ!Box is not from your cable provider, you simply have to connect it to the multimedia outlet and ask your provider to unlock it. The complete FRITZ!Box range of functions for Internet, telephony, and multimedia is then available to all devices in your home network without restriction.

1 Unlocking your FRITZ!Box

If you purchased your FRITZ!Box from a vendor, it may be necessary to have your cable provider unlock it.

  • Ask your cable provider if your FRITZ!Box must be unlocked before using it with your cable connection.
    • With some providers, the serial number and the MAC address of your FRITZ!Box's cable modem (CM MAC) are required to unlock it. You can find these on the sticker on the underside of the device.

2 Connecting the FRITZ!Box to the cable connection

  • Connect the FRITZ!Box to the cable connection. You will find detailed instructions on the installation poster included with the FRITZ!Box and in the manual.

Note:If a cable technician performed the original installation, use the coaxial cable (without an extension) provided by the technician to connect the FRITZ!Box with the first multimedia socket, or the one used by the technician.

3 Configuring the Internet connection

The following steps are only necessary if you purchased the FRITZ!Box from a vendor:

Note:If you obtained your FRITZ!Box from your cable provider, it is configured automatically by the provider.

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. If the FRITZ!Box is set to factory settings:
    1. Select the desired user interface language and click "Next".
    2. Enter the FRITZ!Box password printed on the sticker on the underside of the device and click "Log In".
    3. Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Next". If your country is not included in the list, select "Other country".
      • Now the menu "Set up Internet Connection" is displayed.
    • or, if you have already changed settings in the user interface:
      1. Click "Internet" and then "Account Information".
      2. Enable the option "Internet connection via cable".
  3. Wait until the "Power / Cable" LED remains lit.

Important:Depending on the signal strength and the way your connection is configured, this may take up to 10 minutes. During this time, the "Power / Cable" LED flashes and then stays lit as soon as the connection has been established. If the LED flashes continuously, then the cable connection has not been activated yet or the service is disrupted. In this case, contact your cable provider.

  4. If your cable provider did not unlock the FRITZ!Box yet:
    1. Open a new windows in your web browser and call up a web page of your choice, for example en.avm.de.
      • Now you will be redirected to your cable provider's portal for unlocking your FRITZ!Box.
    2. Follow the instructions given and make note of the account information for your telephone numbers, if they are displayed during the unlocking procedure.
  5. Click "Apply" or "Next" in the FRITZ!Box user interface to save the settings. Restart the FRITZ!Box to complete the configuration of your Internet connection.

4 Setting up telephony

The following steps are only necessary if you purchased the FRITZ!Box from a vendor and would like to use telephones with the FRITZ!Box:

Note:If you received your FRITZ!Box from your cable provider, then telephone numbers are automatically configured in your FRITZ!Box when your Internet connection is configured.
