FRITZ!Box 6490 Cable Service

Configuring the integrated fax function in the FRITZ!Box

With the FRITZ!Box you can also send and receive faxes without an external fax machine. The FRITZ!Box receives the faxes and forwards them as PDF files named after the reception date and time via e-mail and/or saves them on a USB storage device in a folder named "FRITZ\faxbox". When sending faxes, you enter the text in the FRITZ!Box user interface.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • You must select a number for sending faxes that will also automatically be used for receiving faxes. Then you will no longer be able to receive calls to this telephone number since the fax will answer all calls to this number - even telephone calls.
  • A maximum of two A4 pages can be transmitted per fax. If your fax document is longer, it will be shortened to two A4 pages.
  • Only Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox can be used to attach image files to the fax document. For technical reasons, Internet Explorer and Safari cannot be used to attach image files.
  • You can attach one image file saved in JPG or PNG format. Other file formats (such as PDF or DOC) are ignored when sending faxes.
  • Images larger than A4 are reduced in size when the fax is sent. Smaller images are centered.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface.

1 Enabling fax transmission with T.38

If you would like to use an Internet telephone number for faxing, then you must enable T.38 (fax over IP) for fax transmission in the FRITZ!Box. With T.38, a special network protocol is used for fax transmission instead of fax tones. As a result, transmission is significantly less susceptible to interference:

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click on the "Line Settings" tab.

Important:If the "Line Settings" tab is not available, then your cable provider automatically configures the line settings during the configuration procedure. You cannot change these settings later. Your cable provider can provide you with information on the settings.

  4. Enable the option "Fax transmission using T.38" in the "Voice Packets" section.
  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

2 Configuring the fax function

Enabling the fax function and entering a fax ID

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephony Devices" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the "Configure New Device" button.
  4. Select the option "Fax Function" in the "Integrated in the FRITZ!Box" section and click "Next".
  5. In the "Fax ID" field, enter the ID that should be transmitted to anyone who sends a fax to the FRITZ!Box, and that you would like to transmit to recipients when sending faxes. You can enter your number or your name, for example.

Important:Many recipients block faxes from numbers without caller ID in order to protect themselves from unwanted advertisements.

Selecting forwarding via e-mail and location for saving

  1. Select forwarding by e-mail and specify the location for saving:
    • "Forward by e-mail"
      • Faxes you successfully send and receive are automatically forwarded to one or more e-mail addresses. E-mail addresses are separated by a comma and without any spaces between them.

    • "Do not save"
      • Faxes are not saved internally nor on an external USB storage device. You can only select this option if forwarding by e-mail is enabled.
      • If the fax is not successfully forwarded to the e-mail server as an e-mail and you did not opt to also save the fax on a storage device, then the fax is lost and the fax function is disabled. This prevents you from receiving positive confirmation that you received a fax although it was lost when being forwarded as an e-mail. The fax function is not re-enabled until e-mails can be sent again or the FRITZ!Box is restarted.
    • "Save internally"
      • Received faxes are saved in the FRITZ!Box's internal memory. Faxes you send are not saved.
    • "Save on the USB storage medium"
      • Received faxes are saved on a USB storage device connected to the USB port on the FRITZ!Box.Faxes you send are not saved.
      • If you remove the USB storage device later or enable the USB remote connection, you must disable this option again first. Otherwise, you will experience errors when receiving faxes because they cannot be saved.
  2. Click "Next".

Entering e-mail account information

In the next step, you may be asked to enter various e-mail account information. This information is required if you want the FRITZ!Box to forward new faxes via e-mail and the push service has not been configured yet. Enter the e-mail account information as follows:

Note:The e-mail account information can be edited any time under "System > Push-Service > Sender" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.

  1. Enter the password for your e-mail account.
  2. Enter your user name.
  3. Enter the name of your e-mail provider's SMTP server and enter the port used by the SMTP server.

Note:Outgoing e-mails are sent via the SMTP server (SMTP = Simple Mail Transport Protocol). Your e-mail provider can give you the name and port number of the SMTP server.

  4. Enable the option "This server supports a secure connection (SSL)" if your provider supports SSL encryption.
  5. Click "Next".

Assigning telephone numbers

  1. Now define the telephone number for the fax function. When you select telephone numbers, then the fax answers all calls to these numbers and you can no longer be reached under these numbers for calls. Whether you must select numbers depends on whether you would like to receive and/or send faxes:
    • Send and receive faxes
      • Select at least one telephone number to send faxes with. The number(s) is/are then also used to receive faxes.
    • Only receive faxes
      • Select one or more telephone numbers. The fax then answers all calls to these telephone numbers and faxes are automatically received,
        • or:
      • Do not select any numbers, and then automatic fax recognition is used for fax reception. In order for fax recognition to function, a FRITZ!Box answering machine must answer the call. Configure the answering machine so that it accepts the call after two to four rings and do not select the "Greeting only" operating mode. With this operating mode, the time interval is too short fax recognition. The recording will be discarded after it recognizes a fax call.
    • Only send faxes
      • This option is not available. You must select at least one number for sending faxes that is then also used to receive faxes. However, you can select a number each time you send a fax and then disabled it again after it has been sent.
  2. Click "Next" and then "Apply" to save your settings.

Note:If you accept a fax call with a telephone connected to the FRITZ!Box, simply forward the call to a FRITZ!Box answering machine. The answering machine will automatically forward the call to the integrated fax machine after recognizing it as a fax call.

3 Using several e-mail addresses for fax reception

If you defined several telephone numbers for fax reception, then you can assign each telephone number a different e-mail address to which faxes are then forwarded to:

Note:Faxes that are forwarded from a telephone connected to the FRITZ!Box to an answering machine are forwarded to the e-mail address(es) assigned to the first fax number.

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephony Devices" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the button (Edit) for the fax function.
  4. Click on the "Properties" tab.
  5. Enter the e-mail address for the various fax numbers
  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.
