Changing FRITZ!Box's wireless security settings

The FRITZ!Box's wireless network (WiFi) is already protected against unauthorized access by secure WPA2 encryption and the use of a unique network key in its factory settings. In order to establish a wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box, you must either enter this network key in the wireless device (for example a computer, smartphone, game console) manually or configure it automatically by pushing the "WLAN" button on the FRITZ!Box (WPS method).

If you do not want to use the factory settings, you can adjust the wireless security settings of your FRITZ!Box.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface.

1 Enabling the wireless network

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the wireless network for the 2.4 GHz frequency band.
  4. Enable the wireless network for the 5 GHz frequency band.
  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

2 Changing the wireless security settings

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. In the "Encryption" section, select the wireless encryption you would like to secure the wireless network with.

ATTENTION!You should only consider setting up a non-encrypted wireless network if the wireless devices you are using do not support WPA encryption.

    • If you would like to use the secure WPA encryption (recommended):
    1. Enable the option "WPA encryption" in the "Encryption" section.
    2. Select "WPA2 (CCMP)" for the "WPA mode".

Note:If you still use wireless devices that do not support WPA2, you can use the setting "WPA + WPA2". If you select this setting, your wireless devices will automatically use the safest WPA mode for wireless connections.

    3. Enter a password of your choice between 8 and 63 characters long in the "Network key" field.

Important:To ensure optimal security, the password should be at least 20 characters long and contain capital and lower-case letters (but not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, é, í), digits, and other characters.

    • If you do not want to encrypt your wireless network and leave it unprotected (not recommended):
      • Enable the option "non-encrypted" in the "Encryption" section.
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Note:All wireless connections to the FRITZ!Box are cleared when you apply the new network security settings.

Now the popup window "Wireless LAN Access" with the new wireless security settings for the FRITZ!Box opens. Print out or make note of these settings and then reconfigure the wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box.
