Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a fiber optic connection

You want to set up the FRITZ!Box on a fiber optic connection? ✔ It's easy with this guide.

To establish an internet connection via your fiber optic connection (Fiber to the Home, FTTH), connect the FRITZ!Box to the fiber optic connection and enter your account information in the FRITZ!Box user interface.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Unlocking your FRITZ!Box

If you purchased your FRITZ!Box from a retailer, your internet service provider may have to unlock it first:

  1. Call the customer service of your internet service provider and have them unlock the FRITZ!Box for your fiber optic connection, if necessary. Depending on the provider, you can either call their customer service or use an activation portal to activate it.
    • With some providers, the FRITZ!Box's "Modem-ID" is required to unlock it. You can find them on the bottom of the device:

2 Inserting the SFP module into the FRITZ!Box

  1. Insert the SFP module that is suitable for your fiber optic connection into the SFP slot of the FRITZ!Box:
    1. If you have an active fiber optic connection (AON), insert the SFP module "FRITZ!SFP AON" into the SFP slot of the FRITZ!Box.
    2. If you have a passive fiber optic connection (GPON), insert the SFP module "FRITZ!SFP GPON" into the SFP slot of the FRITZ!Box.

Note:Your internet service provider can tell you whether you have an active or a passive fiber optic connection.

3 Connecting the FRITZ!Box to your fiber optic connection

  1. Remove the dust protection caps from the fiber optic cable, the SFP module in the FRITZ!Box, and from the fiber termination unit.
  2. Connect the fiber optic cable to the SFP module in the FRITZ!Box and to the fiber termination unit. Do not bend the fiber optic cable and do not hold the end of the cable in front of your eyes.

Important:If a network termination that is supplied with power and converts optical signals to Ethernet (LAN) was installed instead of a fiber termination unit, have your internet service provider install a passive optical telecommunications outlet.
