Changing FRITZ!Box's wireless security settings

The FRITZ!Box's wireless network (WiFi) is already protected against unauthorized access by secure WPA2 encryption and the use of a unique network key in its factory settings. To establish a wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box, you must either enter this network key in the wireless device (for example a computer, smartphone, game console) manually or push the "WLAN" button on the FRITZ!Box (WPS method) to set it up automatically.

If you do not want to use the factory settings, you can change the wireless security settings of your FRITZ!Box.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Enabling the wireless network

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the wireless network for the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency band. If the option "Wireless radio network enabled" is only displayed once, enable the Advanced View first.
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

2 Changing the wireless security settings

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Click on the "Encryption" tab.
  4. If you want to use secure WPA encryption (recommended):
    1. Enable the option "WPA encryption".
    2. Select "WPA2 (CCMP)" for the "WPA mode".

Note:If you still use old wireless devices that do not support WPA2, use the setting "WPA + WPA2". If you select this setting, your wireless devices automatically use the safest WPA mode for wireless connections.

    3. Enter a password in the "Network key" field. Use numerals, letters, and other characters, and combine capitals and lower-case letters.
    • If you do not want to use encryption (not recommended), which would leave your wireless network unprotected, enable the option "non-encrypted".
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Now the popup window "Wireless LAN Access" with the new wireless access information for the FRITZ!Box opens. Print out or make note of the new wireless access information and reconfigure the wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box.
