FRITZ!Box 4020 Service

Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a fiber optic connection

If you use the FRITZ!Box with a fiber optic modem, you can also use it on a fiber optic connection. Since the FRITZ!Box establishes and controls its own internet connection over the fiber optic modem, all FRITZ!Box functions (such as such as the firewall, parental controls, MyFRITZ!) are also available without restriction in this operating mode.

Note:The terms "fiber optic connection" or "Fiber to the Home" (FTTH) are used for internet connections where the fiber optic lines lead to a fiber optic modem in the home.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • Internet access on the FRITZ!Box's WAN port is limited to 90 to 93 Mbit/s.

ATTENTION!We recommend using a FRITZ!Box with gigabit LAN because only then will you be able to use the full speed offered by your internet connection. You can find information on FRITZ!Boxes with gigabit LAN in the product section of our homepage.

1 Connecting the fiber optic modem and the FRITZ!Box

  1. Connect the fiber optic modem to the fiber optic socket according to the instructions provided by your internet service provider.
  2. Use a network cable to connect the LAN port on the fiber optic modem to the "WAN" port on the FRITZ!Box.
  3. Either use wireless LAN or a network cable to connect a computer to the FRITZ!Box.

2 Configuring internet access

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Enter the FRITZ!Box password on the bottom of the device and click "Log In".
  3. Click "Internet" and then "Account Information".
  4. Select "DSL or fiber optic modem" from the drop-down list "Internet connection via".
  5. If your internet service provider is displayed in the drop-down list, select your provider and enter the account information you received from your internet service provider in the corresponding fields.
    • If your internet service provider is not displayed:
      1. Select "Other internet service provider".
      2. Enter the internet account information you received from your internet service provider in the relevant fields. If account information is not required, enable the option "No".
      3. Enter the speeds of your internet connection in the "Downstream" and "Upstream" fields.
      4. If your internet service provider requires you to use a particular VLAN ID, click "Change connection settings", enable the option "Use VLAN for internet access", and enter the VLAN ID.
  6. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Now the FRITZ!Box uses the account information you entered to establish the internet connection. Configuration is completed when the message "The internet connection check was successful" is displayed.
