FRITZ!Box 3272 Service

Slow wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box

The data rate of the wireless connection (WiFi) established by a wireless device, for example a computer, smartphone, or tablet, to the FRITZ!Box is lower than allowed by the wireless standard. As a result, web pages load slowly, it takes a long time to download files, and video streams are either not displayed correctly or stop playing, for example.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the problem is solved.

1 Installing the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box

  1. Install the latest FRITZ!OS on the FRITZ!Box.

2 Installing the latest software for the wireless device

  1. Install the latest driver for the computer's wireless network adapter (for example using Windows Update) or the latest operating system (for example Android, iOS) for the wireless device.

    Note:Information on the update can be obtained from the device's manufacturer, for example refer to the manual. You can find the latest drivers for the FRITZ!WLAN Sticks in our download area.

3 Automatically configuring wireless channel settings

Configure the following settings so that the FRITZ!Box checks the wireless environment at regular intervals and can automatically avoid interference:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Set radio channel settings automatically (recommended)".
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings. Now wireless connections to the FRITZ!Box are briefly cleared and then automatically reestablished.

4 Disabling Bluetooth for testing purposes

Bluetooth influences the wireless speed in the 2.4 GHz frequency band, which is particularly noticeable when using real-time applications such as video streaming:

  1. Disable Bluetooth on the wireless device (for example smartphone, tablet).

5 Enabling WPA2 encryption

The maximum data rate can only be achieved when the wireless connection is encrypted with WPA2 according to 802.11n. If a different encryption method is used, the maximum data rate is always 54 Mbit/s.

WPA2 encryption is already enabled in the FRITZ!Box's factory settings. If you changed the FRITZ!Box's wireless settings, enable WPA2 encryption and establish the wireless connection using this encryption method:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable WPA encryption.
  4. Select "WPA2 (CCMP)" for the "WPA mode".
  5. Enter a password in the "Network key" field. Use numerals, letters, and other characters, and combine capitals and lower-case letters.
  6. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  7. Print out the wireless security settings or make note of them.
  8. Establish the wireless connection using the security settings you made note of.

6 Finding the ideal location for the FRITZ!Box

  1. If possible, place the FRITZ!Box in a central location. FRITZ!Box has omnidirectional antennas. The wireless signal is therefore emitted spherically in all directions.
  2. Do not place the FRITZ!Box directly in the corner of a room.
  3. Place the FRITZ!Box so that it is as unobstructed as possible, i.e. not directly in back of or under an obstacle such as pieces of furniture or a heater.
  4. Place the FRITZ!Box as high in the room as possible, for example on a shelf.
  5. Place the FRITZ!Box so that there are as few obstacles as possible between it and the wireless devices. Even small objects in the immediate vicinity of your FRITZ!Box can greatly reduce the coverage area of the wireless signal. Metallic objects or objects containing water, for example radiators, refrigerators, or even houseplants, significantly reduce the quality of the wireless signal.
  6. Place the FRITZ!Box away from other radio transmitters, for example microwaves, wireless speakers, or Bluetooth devices.

Now the FRITZ!Box and the wireless device are ideally configured. You will now achieve the greatest possible wireless range as well as the highest throughput between your wireless device and the FRITZ!Box.

NoteIf these measures do not sufficiently improve the quality of the wireless connection, you can use a FRITZ!Repeater to increase the range of the wireless network and the throughput of the wireless connection.
